Focus Description:

The artist picks up a beautiful cloth net with a nickel-plated rim on a long handle and walks towards the audience. He puts his hand into the net and, turning it inside out, shows that there is nothing in the net. He does this twice. Then the magician turns to the audience and asks them to lend him about six handkerchiefs for a few minutes. The spectators themselves place the scarves in the net, which the magician holds out for them. When the audience puts down six scarves, the artist returns to the stage with the net. The spectators see that the scarves have filled the net to the brim. The magician puts his hand inside the net and takes out six large silk handkerchiefs: two blue, two yellow and two red.

The artist places all the scarves on the table in full view of the audience, then immediately puts his hand into the net again and turns it inside out. There is nothing in the net. The spectators' scarves disappeared, and instead of them appeared multi-colored silk scarves that lie on the table. The magician places the net on the table, takes the scarves and, having counted them, places them on the backs of two chairs, three on each back. Pointing to the scarves, the magician says: “You saw that I divided all six scarves into three, they are all untied. I will tie these three scarves.” He approaches the left chair, ties the scarves and shows. “Like this (Fig. 223).

Now I’ll put this chain of scarves on a chair. - Rolls up the scarves and places them on the left chair. - So, here are scarves tied with a chain. - Comes to the right chair. - And what kind of scarves are here, untied? - He lifts the scarves, they turn out to be tied with a chain. - Strange! The chain went here. Let's put it back! - Puts it down. He approaches the left chair. - We also had a chain here? - He takes the scarves - they turn out to be untied. - Look, the chain untied itself. Okay, now I’ll knit the scarves differently, like this, look (Fig. 224).

The scarves tied in this way bear a vague resemblance to a three-pointed star. Let's put the scarves again on the same chair. - Places the scarves on the left chair and approaches the right one. - Remember, here we have a chain. And now? Look, the "star" has moved here! - Shows a “star”. - Let's put her on the same chair. - Comes to the left chair. - Here we had a “star”. Now what? Let's see. - He picks up the scarves - they are untied. - Look, the “star” untied itself! What's on our right chair? "Star"? - He takes the handkerchiefs from the right chair - they are untied. - Look, the scarves are untied here too. - He takes them in his left hand, then goes to the left chair, takes the scarves from there one at a time and transfers them to his left hand. - So, all the scarves are untied! - He crumples them all together and throws them up, the scarves fall to the floor. The assistant comes up and, together with the magician, lifts the scarves, taking one corner in each hand. The scarves are knitted. They formed the figure of a six-pointed star (Fig. 225).

- Look, a six-pointed star! - The magician collects all the scarves in his left hand, throws them up, and six pieces of untied silk scarves fall to the floor. The artist places them one by one in the net given to him and goes to the audience. Putting his hand into the net, he takes out the scarves taken from the spectators and gives them back. “Thank you!” Returning to the stage, the magician turns out the net - it is empty.

Props:

1. Shaking net.

2. Six pieces of silk scarves: two red, two yellow and two blue.

3. The holder of rubber bands on the screw for screwing.

4. A few pieces of small rubber rings. prop device.

1. The change net (Fig. 226) is made for replacing objects placed in it. It consists of a nickel-plated copper rim, to which is sewn a bag of beautiful lined material. A small tube is soldered to the rim, into which a turned wooden handle is inserted. This is what the net looks like externally.

Focus Mystery Handkerchiefs
Fig. 226

If you look at Fig. 227, you can see that handle 1 is made separately from handle 2. The handle fits tightly onto a metal rod 5, which passes through the hole in handle 2 and goes inside the rim. There, the rod bends along the profile of the rim into a semi-ring 4 and, bent at a right angle, enters the outer edge of the rim, where it serves as an axis 5 for turning the semi-ring inside the rim and the net. Rod 3 is shown at the moment of lowering the net inside. As is clear from the figure, the rod is rotated using handle 1.

Focus Mystery Handkerchiefs
Fig. 227

The inner bag of the net consists of two parts: the first is a bag the same as the outer one, and the second is a strip of material sewn into the middle of the bag; she divides the bag into two equal parts. Being sewn to a half-ring, this strip of material, when the rod is turned, either opens or closes half of the bag, dividing it into compartments 6 and 7. By imperceptibly turning handle 1, half-ring 4 is turned inside the net, moving it from one side of the net to the other. If you now put the scarf inside the net and imperceptibly move the half-ring to the other side, then the scarf will “disappear” in the net; in fact, it will be inside behind a strip of material sewn with the upper edge to the half-ring. Now you can turn the net inside out, and the audience will not see anything except the lining of the net.

We have described the design of the net in detail so that amateurs can understand the principle of its manufacture. Let us only add that both the outer bag and its lining are sewn to a narrow thin metal hoop with a diameter equal to the inner edge of the rim. Through the punched holes, the hoop is screwed with small screws to the larger edge of the rim inside it so as not to interfere with the movement of the half ring. The width of the rim is made taking into account the free rotation of the half ring with a sewn strip of material and the placement of a hoop with a net bag sewn to it.

The swing net will be very useful for many tricks in the future, and therefore you should not spare either money or labor on its manufacture.

2. Silk scarves measuring 40x40 cm, two scarves in three different colors.

3. The holder for rubber rings is shown in Fig. 228. It is made of a metal plate, in the center of which a screw is welded, allowing the holder to be easily screwed into wood. In addition, four racks with a height of 40 and a thickness of 4 mm are welded to the plate. Rubber rings are put on the racks.

Fig. 228

4. Rubber rings made of very good elastic rubber are put on the holder, from where they are taken as needed. The diameter of the rings is best 10 mm. If you cannot get rings of this diameter, you will have to fold large rings several times.

The secret of focus. One of the three secrets of this trick is the blackjack net. In it, scarves taken from spectators are exchanged for silk scarves placed there in advance. The second secret is the secret of tying scarves. For discreet binding, as you probably already guessed, rubber rings are used that are placed on the holder. This holder is screwed in advance unnoticed behind the back of the chair and three or four rubber rings are put on it. To knit scarves inconspicuously, proceed as follows: take three scarves in your right hand and hold them by the corners with your thumb, index and middle fingers, discreetly remove the rubber ring from the holder, as shown in Fig. 228.

Now they pass one handkerchief to the left hand; it will disguise the rubber ring located there. When the second handkerchief is brought up with the right hand, the corner of the handkerchief is quickly bent with the left hand and passed into the rubber ring. They do not let go of the ring and, bringing the second scarf, again slightly bend its upper corner and also thread it into the ring. Then the ring is immediately released from the fingers - it will firmly connect the corners of the two scarves. Pass the (now connected by a ring) two scarves into your right hand and wave them casually, at the same time discreetly removing the second ring from the holder. Pass the two (knitted) handkerchiefs again to your left hand and wave one handkerchief in your right hand; at this moment prepare a ring on your left hand to receive handkerchiefs.

Bring the scarf to your left hand with your right hand and, attaching its upper corner to one of the lower corners of the scarf of your left hand, slightly bend the ears and thread them into the ring. Then slide the ring off your fingers. You will get a chain of three scarves (see Fig. 223). In gathering this chain of handkerchiefs together to lay them down, the magician takes the handkerchiefs by the untied ends, ensuring that the ends tied with rubber bands are in the middle of the roll of handkerchiefs; this will disguise the rubber bands from the view of spectators.

In Fig. 229 shows the moment of tying three scarves into a “star” with a rubber ring. When tying scarves with a “star”, both three-pointed and six-pointed, do this: with your left hand, quietly remove the rubber ring from the holder (Fig. 228). Then, passing one scarf at a time from the right hand to the left, pass their ends into the rubber ring.

Focus Mystery Handkerchiefs
Fig. 229

As soon as the last scarf is passed into the ring, the ring is released from the fingers and with the right hand they take all the tied scarves, roll them up and place them in the indicated place. The entire process of secret invisible binding was described above.

The third secret of the trick is the secret of untying scarves. But in order to know how to untie scarves, you should become familiar with the tying method in which you can untie scarves unnoticed and quickly.

To knit scarves, proceed as follows: take the corner of one scarf with the thumb, index and middle fingers of your right hand, and take the second scarf in your left hand in the same way. Bring your right hand in front of your left and pass the end of the handkerchief of your right hand to your left hand and pinch it with your thumb and forefinger, while at the same time press the handkerchief of your left hand to your palm with the middle finger of your left hand. Now with your free right hand, take the left handkerchief by the corner and wrap it around the clamped right one from top to bottom and forward. You will get a knot at the corners of the scarves (Fig. 230).

Focus Mystery Handkerchiefs
Fig. 230

Pull the corner of the right handkerchief tightly so that it forms a straight line and so that the left one wraps around it. Now take the ends of the knot and the end of the right handkerchief, place it behind the end of the left one and insert it from the front into the resulting loop and tighten the second knot, but making sure that the right handkerchief is always pulled in a straight line. If necessary, hold it with your fingers when tying. This way, the left scarf will make two knots around the right one, and it can be easily moved and removed. While pretending that you are tightening the knots, try at this time to make the knots so that they easily slide along the right handkerchief, but at the same time they are strong enough and cannot jump off it prematurely.

If you look closely at Fig. 231, then you can see that the right handkerchief (it is shaded) is stretched between the hands, and the left one is tied with two knots around it. It is very difficult to give an exact description of the tying of such slipknots; they can be knitted in different ways, you just need to learn how to tie knots very quickly without looking at the scarves.

Focus Mystery Handkerchiefs
Fig. 231

Untying scarves occurs like this: hold one scarf in your left hand, take the second scarf with your right hand near the knot, bring the knot to your left hand and with the thumb of your right hand move the knot from the second scarf. Then, passing the scarf to the left hand, the second knot is untied in the same way, unnoticed by the audience. Tying with a slip knot and untying it requires a lot of practice to do it without looking at your hands, as the audience will follow the magician's gaze.

Preparation and demonstration of the trick. First of all, tie three scarves in a chain with slip knots. Let the first scarf be light (yellow), tie a blue one to it and a red one to the blue one. Now fold all three scarves so that the knots are in the middle and wrap them with a red scarf. Then put the other three scarves together with these scarves, roll them up and put them in the net. Turn the half ring and close the scarves inside the net. Then screw a holder to one of the chairs and put three or four rubber rings on it. Now you can start demonstrating the trick. Before going to the audience, the artist shows that the net is empty. He puts his hand inside the net and turns it inside out. He then asks the audience to place six scarves in the net. Spectators put them down, with the scarves sticking out of the net. The magician, returning to the stage, quickly crumples the scarves and, hiding them in a net, turns the half ring. Then he takes silk scarves out of the net, places them temporarily on one of the chairs and quickly unscrews the net, showing it to the audience. After this, the net is placed on the table.

Now take all the scarves in your left hand and start counting: “One!” (Take one handkerchief with your right hand and move your hand sharply to the right.) “Two!” (Do the same with the second scarf.) “Three”! (Take all three scarves at once into your right hand, and quietly transfer two scarves from it to your left.) Now you have three scarves in each hand. You place three right handkerchiefs (tied) on the right chair, and take one handkerchief from your left hand and count: “One! Two! Three!” - emphasizing that all scarves are untied. Then you tie three scarves from the left chair in a chain with slip knots and, showing the chain to the audience (see Fig. 223), fold the scarves (in fact, at this time you need to undo both knots unnoticed). Now put the “knitted” scarves on the left chair and go to the right chair to the scarves that are untied, in the opinion of the audience. Carefully take the scarves, and the audience will see that the scarves “by themselves” are tied into a chain. It seems to the audience that you are folding the scarves, but in fact you are quickly untying them, that is, you remove the knots and, quietly taking a rubber ring, pass all three scarves into it, fasten them with a three-pointed star and place them on a chair. The audience is convinced that you put handkerchiefs tied with a chain.

Approaching the other scarves, you see that they are untied. You tie them with a “star” and, after showing them to the audience, place them on a chair, but in fact, while tying, you imperceptibly pull off the knot and place not the “star”, but the untied scarves. Approaching the right chair and showing the audience the “star”, pretend to fold the scarves, and at the same time quietly drop the rubber ring from the scarves onto the floor. The stage floor should be carpeted. You place untied scarves, while the audience thinks that you are placing a “star”. Then everything goes according to the description. While you are collecting all the scarves, with your left hand, quietly take the rubber ring from the holder, insert the corners of all six scarves into it and throw it up. Scarves tied with a six-pointed star will fall to the floor. When you fold the “star”, quietly remove the rubber ring from the scarves and throw six scarves up a second time - they will fall untied to the floor.

In conclusion, we advise: when putting a rubber ring on scarves, do not hold your hand with the ring motionless, all the time move your hands slightly and turn your body slightly from side to side. Do not look at your hands when tying or untying scarves.

Rubber rings that have fallen to the floor should be picked up discreetly. The holder can be soldered to a safety pin and pinned to the right side of the vest, from where you can take rubber rings unnoticed under the cover of the right side.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Graphene laser for photonic microcircuits 07.06.2013

An international team of researchers from the UK, Greece and Japan has found a new use for graphene. Based on this material, it was possible to create an infrared pulsed laser, and, according to scientists, such lasers can also generate ordinary light pulses.

Graphene is distinguished by the absence of a band gap, that is, its electrons can be in a state with any energy level, unlike insulators or semiconductors, which have a certain minimum distance between the ground state and the state following it in energy. Due to the absence of a band gap, graphene can absorb even quanta with not very high energy and thus temporarily block infrared laser radiation.

When graphene is exposed to infrared radiation, the material at a certain moment (in the experiments of physicists this happened in less than a nanosecond) sharply changes its optical properties and becomes transparent. According to scientists, the implementation of such an effect directly inside the ytterbium-glass laser makes it possible to control its operation: the laser emits only when the graphene film placed inside its resonator becomes sufficiently transparent. After the graphene releases a light pulse to the outside, it begins to absorb radiation again and everything repeats again, with a frequency of about 1,6 GHz.

Calculations show that a similar scheme can be successfully used to generate pulses with any other wavelength, both in the near infrared and in the visible range. In other words, it is theoretically possible to make pulsed lasers of various colors based on graphene, and the material does not need to be subjected to additional processing. The authors of the new work consider the heat resistance of the material to be another advantage of graphene: many other substances with similar properties quickly burn out under intense irradiation.
