Focus Description:

There are three candles on the table in candlesticks. The magician asks an assistant to light a candle. Taking matches from the table, he lights the first candle. The illusionist says it's too easy to light a match. With these words, showing his right hand from all sides, he opens his palm and brings his hand to the candle (Fig. 304).

The audience can clearly see that the hand is open and there is nothing in it. The performer extinguishes the candle, then, raising his hand to the third candle, lights it with the touch of his fingers, then lights the second and first candles in the same way and immediately shows the audience both empty hands.

Box of matches.

Secret ignition device.

Focus secret:

The secret is in the ignition device (Fig. 305, A). This is a narrow copper strip, bent in a half ring. A thin small tube with a diameter of 4 - 5 mm and a length of 15 - 20 mm is soldered to it. A cotton wick dipped in olive or other oil is filled into the tube. It is necessary that the oil burns evenly and calmly, without soot. The device prepared in this way (it must first be painted to match the color of the hand) is put on the right middle finger (Fig. 305, B and C).

If we now open our hand, turning our palm towards the audience, they will not notice device A; it will be hidden by hand. Then, if you quickly turn your palms, the audience will not have time to notice anything either.

The magician, putting his hand to the first burning candle, imperceptibly lights the wick from it. Then, moving his hand a little behind the candle, he extinguishes it, holding the burning wick between the thumb and forefinger of his right hand. Following this, he lights all three candles, as if with a simple touch of his fingers, in fact, with the help of a device burning in the tube - a wick.

The trick is very simple, but requires practice in front of a mirror. When the wick is burning, avoid sudden movements with your right hand so that the fire does not go out. When all three candles are lit, the illusionist extinguishes the wick with sharp movements of the hand and imperceptibly drops the device from the finger onto the table, behind the candlestick or on the sideboard.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Stem cells for muscle regeneration 22.09.2016

Myodystrophy - hereditary diseases in which degradation of muscle tissue occurs - is incurable at the current stage of development of medicine. Methods of tissue engineering using stem cells give hope that the disease will be defeated in the future. To do this, you need to learn how to grow muscle stem cells, so that later they can be transplanted into the patient and cause the regeneration of his skeletal muscles.

Such cells grow extremely reluctantly in culture, but they readily die during transplantation, giving few muscle cells. Therefore, researchers are looking for a cocktail of substances that would make the reproduction of muscle stem cells reliable. The same question worries those who hope to grow meat products from animal stem cells.

Another attempt was made by Japanese researchers from the National Center for Neurology and Psychiatry in Kodaira, led by Dr. Takeda Shinishi. They treated satellite muscle stem cells with a substance from the group of cytokines, the so-called leukemia inhibitory factor - LIF. And when such cells were planted in an experimental mouse, they gave three times more muscle tissue than in the control (in the photo, the new cells glow brightly).

"To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experience showing the effectiveness of LIF in muscle regeneration," says Dr. Takeda. "However, the mechanism of action of the factor is still unknown."
