Focus Description:

This spectacular illusion should be shown only in front of a small audience, since the cubes with which the artist works are relatively small, their edges are no more than three centimeters, so the trick looks bad from the stage and at a great distance.

On a tray standing on the table there are 8-10 cubes of non-repeating colors and a small, square tube 30 cm long.

Taking 3-4 cubes from the table, the presenter, throwing and catching them, talks to the audience: “Here in front of you are several multi-colored cubes, as they say, for every taste, and a small square tube.” He puts the cubes on the tray, leaving only one for himself, picks up the tube, looks at the audience through it, points to the light, passes the cube through it from both ends - it passes very freely, since the tube has holes somewhat larger than the cube . “I can see in your eyes that you really want to take a closer look at these objects and touch them with your own hands. Please, just handle them more carefully, as they are not very durable.”

The presenter approaches the audience, lets 3-5 people examine this prop, and then returns to the table. “You are convinced that these are completely ordinary things made by my hands, but they have one interesting property. Any of the cubes you chose (takes 3-5 cubes in your hands) can disappear. Which one of them (shows the cubes that you hold in your hands) you choose?" At first, the viewers' opinions differ, but pretty soon everyone decides on one, usually the brightest, cube. Then the magician begins to stack the cubes on the tray in a column, that is, one on top of the other, but at the same time turns them in relation to each other so that their faces (when viewed from above) form a regular eight-pointed star - you see all this in Fig. 28. Having placed two cubes, he takes the third cube, which should “disappear”.

"Perhaps you want me to put it first or second?" - the presenter asks the audience. Again, the opinions of the audience do not coincide. In general, this cube can be placed anywhere, but not last. However, the lower the cube lies, the easier it is for a novice artist to perform the trick. And this is not difficult to achieve. Raising his hand and thereby stopping the noise, the magician says: “Your opinions differ and since I cannot satisfy them all at once, let’s give the right of choice to one of the ladies present here. This will be most fair.” Having looked at all the women present, he turns to one of them, and she replies that she wants the cube to be placed second. The fact is that when the audience was noisy, the artist noticed that it was this spectator who wanted to put the cube second, so he turned to her.

So, the cubes are stacked in a column and the second cube in it is the one that will “disappear”. Taking the square tube in his hands, the artist very carefully, so that our column does not fall, puts it on the top cube; then, turning the tube so that the planes of the faces of the underlying cube coincide with the faces of the cube located inside the tube, he lowers the tube, hiding the second (from above) cube in it: so, turning the tube all the time, he lowers it until he hides in the tube the whole column.

Having sprinkled the pipe with “magic powder” and made “magic” passes, the illusionist slowly and gradually lifts the pipe. The first lower cube appears from under it; the magician immediately pulls the tube to the side and, placing it next to the cube, slowly lifts it until the next cube comes out completely. Then he, again pulling off and placing the tube on the tray, takes out another cube. So he extracts 4-5 cubes, and simply pours the rest out of the tube onto a tray. There are one fewer cubes - the very cube that was chosen by the audience has “disappeared”. The magician shows that it is not inside the tube either - the cube “disappeared” without a trace.

The secret of focus. Before we tell you about the simple device that is our secret, we should warn you: when making cubes, you need to pay special attention to the accuracy of their sizes. You will find the cube pattern in Fig. 19. The edge size of the finished cube is 30 mm. The cubes must have the correct shape and should not diverge from each other by more than 0,5 mm, otherwise it will be very difficult to work with them, and the column made of them will fall apart.

Among the cubes there is one that has not six, but only five faces - in Fig. 29 shows its general appearance and pattern. Actually, it only looks like a cube from a distance, but in fact it is a case in which the “disappearing” cube is hidden. This is done after all the cubes are ready.

Despite all the care in manufacturing, our cubes will differ somewhat from each other - we will choose the one that turns out to be the largest. We will use it to determine the dimensions of the case, which is the only secret in this trick. If this largest of the cubes fits easily and is completely hidden in the case, then there is no doubt about the rest. The cubes are made of thick paper; the cover must be made of glued thin cardboard 0,5 mm; this is necessary not only for strength, but also so that the case is heavy and can fall onto the “disappearing” cube under its own weight. The cover should be black inside and out, this is necessary because objects painted in this color seem smaller than those that are lighter, and we need this, since the cover is larger in size than the cubes and the public can pay attention to this.

The internal dimensions of the tube are 1 mm larger than the dimensions of the case. The length of the tube, if you are working with ten cubes, is 31 cm, if with eight - 25 cm. This allows the magician, when the entire column of cubes is inside the tube, to press his finger through the top hole on the last cube to be sure that the case is completely inserted on the "disappearing" cube. You have already accumulated enough experience, and you can cut the tube and make it out of cardboard yourself. The inside is covered with paper of any color, and on the outside we recommend sprinkling it with bronze over the enamel; it will look very beautiful next to multi-colored cubes.

In conclusion, a few words about the execution of the trick. First of all, the case should always lie with its open side down, so it is placed on top of the cube that is supposed to “disappear.” When rehearsing a trick, it is very important to learn how to use the tube well and freely - to hide cubes in it and open them. The most crucial and difficult moment for the performer comes when our cover is hidden in the tube - here it is necessary to be able to accurately turn the tube and instantly lower it. Otherwise there will be confusion. Imagine that you turn and hold the tube - our black case will immediately slide out of it, cover the underlying cube, and the viewer will see it.

The secret will be revealed, and you already know what this means. The second important and difficult moment for the magician will be the appearance of the cubes from the tube one at a time and especially the cover with the cube inside. In this case, they do this: the illusionist holds the tube by the lower end, about two centimeters from the edge, and when one cube has come out completely, he squeezes the fingers holding the tube and thus prevents the next cube from falling out; Having placed the tube on the tray, he loosens his fingers and, lifting the tube, allows the next cube to appear, then squeezes his fingers again - and so on until he releases the cube next to the case; he simply pours the rest of the cubes onto the tray. Naturally, when the performer holds the case and the cube in it, his fingers should squeeze the walls of the tube a little stronger.

Everything said here must be worked out very well and only then show the trick in public.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Salt was sprinkled on the tadpole's tail 21.04.2011

Many lower animals have a much greater capacity for regeneration than man. So, the tadpole is able to grow a cut off or bitten off tail.

As experimenters from Tufts University (USA) discovered, table salt is needed for this process. If you sprinkle it on the wound, the tail grows faster even if scar tissue (scar) has already formed.

It is assumed that such studies will further help find ways to induce human organs and tissues to regenerate.
