Focus Description:

The magician enters the stage. "For this trick, I need an assistant. I will ask one of the ladies present to come up to the stage." When the assistant enters the stage, the magician offers her a chair. “I need to keep an extremely secret package until the end of the trick, and since no one knows how to keep secrets better than women, I invited you,” with these words he hands her a package sealed with sealing wax. "I ask you not to open the package until my instruction and keep it so that it is in full view of the audience at all times. Thank you!"

"I need another assistant who can count well. It could be a man." The artist seats this assistant at a small table, near which there is a shield with a sheet of paper impaled on it. On the table is a jar of paint, there is also a small brush.

Taking out a notebook and a pencil (or a self-writing pen) from his pocket, the magician descends into the auditorium. Approaching one of those present, he gives him a pencil and asks him to write any seven-digit number on the first page of an open notebook, which the magician is holding in his hands; then the pencil is passed to another spectator and he writes any other seven-digit number, exactly below the one previously written. So the artist walks around six people sitting in different rows, and each writes one seven-digit number.

Then the magician goes up to the stage and, tearing out a piece of paper with written numbers from a notebook, passes it to an assistant sitting at the table with a request to calculate the sum of these numbers. The notebook is hidden in the pocket. While the result is being summed up, the host goes to the forefront and talks to the audience, asking them to keep quiet so as not to interfere with the work of his assistant spectator. After a few seconds, the numbers are added up, about which the artist is informed by his voluntary assistant. After checking the result, the magician asks to write the amount received in large on the shield, for this there is paint with a brush on the table. The assistant writes 25 400 674. Then the artist offers to open the "secret" package; from it the assistant takes out a folded paper tape, on which the same number is written large and clearly, in this case - 25 400 674.

The public is amazed. The host thanks his assistants, and they descend into the hall.

Focus secret:

The first half of the secret is in the notebook. This is a regular notepad with loose-leaf paper and a smooth cover with no inscriptions. If you cannot buy such a notebook, it is easy to make a similar cover for it from colored paper. It is better to have two such identical notebooks.

Our magician wrote down six seven-digit numbers one below the other on the first page of the notebook in advance, in our example:

3 825 324

5 337 685

1 238 456

7 622 833

4 127 384

3 248 992

They were written with the same pencil or fountain pen, which was then used by the audience. When the artist wrote the numbers, he changed his handwriting all the time so that the numbers seemed to be written by different people. Having calculated the sum of these six numbers on a separate sheet, the magician knew that it was equal to 25. He wrote this number clearly and large on a paper tape, which he put in a bag, sealed with sealing wax.

When the artist entered the hall, he opened the notebook from the opposite side, and thus the audience wrote down their numbers on the last page of the notebook; so that the trick was not noticed, the magician did not let go of the notebook from his hands. Returning to the stage, he closed the notebook, and then tore out and gave to the spectator-assistant for counting the sheet that he had written in advance.

The magician has a second notebook for replacement in case, after the trick, one of the spectators wants to examine the notebook. That's the whole secret of this number.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Glass softens from weak laser light 20.11.2004

American scientists have discovered a strange effect: very small changes in the power of an ultra-weak laser can greatly change the hardness of germanium-selenium glass.

“It all started when my graduate student Yared Gump, who measured the hardness of the GeSe system glasses, began to bring me data every day that differed greatly,” says the head of the work, Ohio University professor Ratnasingham Suryakumar. “After a while, we guessed what these changes represent is an objective reality."

This glass, an alloy of 80% Ge and 20% Se, is a very interesting material used in electronics. Germanium is hard and selenium is soft. The proportion of 4:1 corresponds to the critical point - such a substance is no longer hard, but also not soft. To understand the reason for the change in properties, scientists examine hardness. And they do this by measuring the speed of sound - in a solid it is greater than in a soft one. And it is here that a beam of a super-weak laser, thin as a hair, appears on the stage - it is emitted by a device that measures the speed of sound in a solid body.

It turns out that increasing the beam power from just 2 to 6 milliwatts reduces the hardness of the glass by half! "It's as incredible as a police radar that changes the speed of a car with its radiation," says Professor Suryakumar. After the end of irradiation, the hardness of the material becomes the same.
