Thermosiphon solar water heating systems with natural circulation (convection) of the coolant are called, which are used in warm winter conditions (in the absence of frost). In general, these are not the most efficient of solar energy systems, but they have many advantages in terms of housing construction. They are easy to manufacture and for the most part work without the help of an electric pump.

Thermosyphon circulation of the coolant occurs due to a change in the density of water with a change in its temperature. When the water in the collector (usually flat) is heated, it rises up the riser and enters the storage tank; in its place, cold water enters the collector from the bottom of the storage tank. Therefore, it is necessary to locate the collector below the storage tank and insulate the connecting pipes.

Thermosiphon systems have problems with freezing and bursting of collectors, which happens even in warm regions where frost occurs only once or twice a year. One frosty night is enough for an unprotected collector to be damaged. For frost protection, sometimes 10 cm thick copper pipes and well-insulated double-glazed enclosures are used. The volume of water in such a system is too large, which helps to prevent freezing and rupture in light frost. Such installations are popular in subtropical and tropical areas.

The thermosyphon system is divided into three main parts:

Flat collector (absorber).
Pipelines.
Hot water storage tank (boiler).

The solar collector is usually mounted on a lower floor, balcony or pitched roof so that the top edge of the panel is at least 50 cm below the bottom of the storage tank. The tank is installed on the second floor, in the attic, sometimes under the roof arch, so that there is at least 50 cm difference in height between the absorber plate and the tank.

It is customary in Swiss hospitals to disinfect hospital sheets and clothing with hot water at 80 degrees Celsius for one minute or 66 degrees Celsius for half an hour.

Swiss experts in household appliances from the Federal Technical Testing Laboratory drew attention to the fact that modern washing powders make it possible to wash clothes well at low water temperatures - only plus 40 and even 30 degrees Celsius. This saves energy, but does not allow the laundry to be disinfected.

According to French data, in 43% of cases, the housewife sets the temperature on the washing machine to 30 degrees Celsius. Experiments conducted in the laboratory have shown that after such washing, many microorganisms remain alive. They can also remain on the walls of the washing drum.

Therefore, Swiss engineers recommend running an "empty" wash on the machine from time to time with a water temperature of 90 degrees Celsius. This is not very important if you do laundry at home, since germs usually have time to spread between members of the same family without the participation of laundry. But, if you do laundry in a self-service laundry, first, without pawning your laundry, set the temperature to 95 degrees Celsius for a few minutes.

Based on these recommendations, some German manufacturers of washing machines began to supply their models with the H key (from the word Hygiene - hygiene), when pressed, the machine is filled with water, and this water is brought almost to a boil.
