Focus Description:

A tall elegant wardrobe stands on the stage. The illusionist with an assistant rotate it so that the audience can view the cabinet from all sides. Then the performer opens the front door and then the back door, and the audience has the opportunity to look through the cabinet. The illusionist even walks through an empty closet, after which he and an assistant close both doors. Suddenly, the front door swings open and a beautiful girl emerges from the closet!

Focus secret:

A. This "magic" cabinet is very easy to make. Its material and dimensions are as follows: a square in plan with a side of 2,5 feet (75 cm), a height of 6 feet (1,8 m), which stands on a platform, which is a square with a side of 5 feet (1,5 m) on wheels. The doors are hinged on diagonally opposite corners of the cabinet. For lightness, it can be made from half-inch (1,2 cm) plywood with 1x2-inch (1,2x5 cm) bars as stiffeners so that the cabinet does not "drag" under the weight of the girl.

C. Having made the cabinet, decorate it in a style that matches the theme of the presentation.

1. The girl hides in a closet backstage. At your direction, the cabinet is rolled out to the center of the stage. Together with an assistant, you turn the cabinet around the axis a full turn to show the audience all its sides.

2. The assistant opens the back door. The girl immediately leaves the closet discreetly and hides behind the door.

3. Almost simultaneously, you go around the closet and, opening the front door, go through it to the stage in front of the audience.

4. Your assistant steps forward and stands to the left of the front door.

5. You are standing to the right of the front door, pointing to a completely empty closet. The girl at this time is hidden behind the open back door.

6. The next step is the most important. Since both you and your assistant are standing in front of the closet, the coordination of movements when closing the doors is very precise. You close the front door first while the assistant takes a step towards the back. The fraction of a second that the assistant needs to take this step is given to the girl to go into the closet. If these movements are precisely coordinated, it will appear that both doors were closed at the same time.

7. You and the assistant move away from the closet. The girl opens the door and solemnly appears on the stage!

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Shared attention synchronizes brains 04.05.2017

It is known that when two people engage in some kind of joint activity, their brain activity is synchronized. When several musicians play the same piece, their brains work in harmony with each other, even if the musicians themselves play different parts. Common features in brain activity can be found in people who just watch movies together.

Researchers from New York University experimented with a group of students: during the semester, students went to class wearing a portable device for reading brain waves. Thus, we managed to collect information about how the brain works in a real, non-laboratory social group and under different conditions: when a person is interested in listening to material, when, on the contrary, it is boring; in addition, the authors of the work were interested in how each of the participants in the experiment relates to their comrades and to the teacher, and how much each of them generally likes group activity.

It turned out that the degree of synchronization of brain activity coincided with how interested students were in the subject and in the teacher - in other words, if they were interested in the material and how it was presented, their brain electrical rhythms became similar. On the other hand, synchronization depended on how much people like each other and how easy it is for them to communicate with each other. That is, in response to interesting material, close friends’ brains coincide more strongly than those who are indifferent to each other (although they may also be interested in class).

Great synchronization between friends came only if they personally talked before the lecture; moreover, at the lecture itself, it was no longer necessary for them to look each other in the face - their brains were synchronized anyway. Everything looked as if two people tuned in to a common wave before the event, so that afterward they perceived the event itself in the same way. Those for whom it was especially important to work in a group showed greater synchronization with their comrades.

I really like magic tricks. I think that this trick with the closet, I imagine it like this: one person is in the closet and the other is also in, the closet is just on the other side.
