The first method

1. To start, you need to make a small gap between the top two cards using your little finger. You can do this by talking to the audience, holding the deck in your left hand and fanning it dreamily with your right hand. In this way, the hand pushes the top two cards to the right so much that when the cards are aligned, you can slip the little finger of your left hand under the corner of the second card. By aligning the cards with your right hand, palm down, with your thumb at the bottom of the deck and your second and third fingers at the top, you will hide from the audience that your little finger is slightly intruding into the deck.

2. Now bend the index finger of your right hand so that it presses on the top card and lift the top two cards with your right thumb. The thumb gently pushes the top two cards forward, allowing the little finger of the left hand to straighten, which has already completed its mission. As the two cards are pushed forward, the second and third fingers of the right hand lift them together and the index finger keeps the two cards bent and perfectly aligned with each other. Show the card (actually the second card) to the spectators and return them both to the deck and line it up.

second method

This method of double lifting also involves a gap made by the little finger.

1. Again push the top two cards forward 1-2 cm with the thumb of your right hand, releasing the little finger of your left hand. At this time, the index finger of the right hand presses on the two cards as before, and the thumb of the left hand covers the deck as if it were sliding the top card to the right. At the same time, the index finger of the left hand holds the deck from behind, while the second and third fingers of the left hand hold the two cards on the long sides and, with the help of the thumb, do not allow them to separate. The fingers of the right hand and thumbs hold the cards aligned at the bottom and top.

2. Now pinch the top two cards between your right thumb and your first two fingers. Turn these two cards over and place them on top of a deck in which the cards are face down, partially overlapping the top cards (see picture below right).

The top two cards are sandwiched between thumb and fingers

3. When the public sees the "top card", take two cards and place them face down again in the deck, effortlessly deceiving the gullible public. Of course, you need to be sure that the top two cards are accurately aligned with each other at all times. This manipulation is easier to do than to describe, and if you follow the directions exactly and practice, the double lift will look smooth and convincing on you.

Focus Double lift (two ways)
The top two cards are placed face up on the deck to show the "top" card to the audience. Without changing the position of your hands, place them back into the deck face down - the five of diamonds will be under the top card

In many tricks where you need to guess the location of a card intended by the spectator, you need to know which card is at the bottom of the deck. You, of course, cannot openly look at the bottom card, so you need to find a way to sneak a glance at it so as not to arouse the public's suspicion.

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Implanted brain stimulator 30.04.2024

In recent years, scientific research in the field of neurotechnology has made enormous progress, opening new horizons for the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. One of the significant achievements was the creation of the smallest implanted brain stimulator, presented by a laboratory at Rice University. Called Digitally Programmable Over-brain Therapeutic (DOT), this innovative device promises to revolutionize treatments by providing more autonomy and accessibility to patients. The implant, developed in collaboration with Motif Neurotech and clinicians, introduces an innovative approach to brain stimulation. It is powered through an external transmitter using magnetoelectric power transfer, eliminating the need for wires and large batteries typical of existing technologies. This makes the procedure less invasive and provides more opportunities to improve patients' quality of life. In addition to its use in treatment, resist ... >>

The perception of time depends on what one is looking at 29.04.2024

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Thus, it was shown that our perception of time is closely related to what we look at. Larger and smaller ... >>

Acoustic tweezers 27.01.2016

A team of engineers representing several American universities presented their development - acoustic tweezers, with which you can move single cells without touching them, due to the action of sound waves.

Scientists have used sound waves to create special nodes that the cell is trapped in and transported to another location in any of the three dimensions. Due to the absence of real contact, the cell is not damaged or deformed. Knots are created in the gap between two generators of surface sound waves: when they meet, the waves create pressure, which acts as a trap for particles. By displacing this standing wave, one can move the particle in two dimensions, and changing the amplitude gives a movement in the third dimension.

The movement accuracy in the horizontal plane is 1 micrometer, and in the vertical plane - 2 micrometers. The researchers demonstrated the transport of a 10 micrometer particle at an average speed of 2,5 micrometers per second.

Engineers not only created the tool itself, but also showed how bioprinting can be carried out using it. Such a printer makes it possible to form accurate 2-D and 3-D microstructures; with the help of such a device, it will be possible, for example, to easily create artificial neural networks.
