Sometimes, for the trick, you will need to force the viewer to select one or more cards (we will use the term "forcing a card" in what follows) so that she gets the impression that she has chosen them at random herself.

For this technique, you again need to know the top card of the deck.

Doing this manipulation for yourself, you will think: "Of course, it is obvious that the chosen card is the one that lay on top of the deck." Therefore, you must do everything in such a way that no one in the audience has time to think the same thing. You have the advantage that the public has not seen what you have done before, they are too absorbed in what you will do next to try to analyze your actions.

1. Shuffle the deck with false shuffle, making sure the card you want to force stays on top of the deck. Let's say it's a seven of hearts.

2. Hand the deck face down to one of the spectators, let it be Fedor, and say: "Take some cards from the top of the deck, Fedor, and put them back face up." Fedor will do it. "Thank you, Fedor. Now let someone else, let's say you, Julia, remove more cards from the top of the deck and put them back face up." Julia will do it. You now have a deck in your hand with the top of the cards face up and the bottom face down.

3. Fan out the cards until all the face up cards are in your right hand, now ask Julia to take the top face down card from your left hand. Say at the same time: "Here is the card that you and Fedor chose from the shuffled and twice removed deck." It seems to the public that the card is chosen at random - and only you know that this is the seven of hearts.

You can use this shuffle to force multiple cards, as in trick "Telephone number".

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

More than 10 thousand scientific articles retracted 31.12.2023

In 2023, it became clear that the problem of fake scientific articles was growing in scale. More than ten thousand publications were retracted, mostly from journals owned by Hindawi, the London subsidiary of Wiley. This is likely a result of the common practice of publishing bogus research. Over the past two decades, the most frequently retracted articles were those whose authors came from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Russia, China and Egypt.

Every year, millions of scientific articles appear in peer-reviewed journals, but sometimes they are retracted for various reasons. An example of this situation is the story of the American physicist Ranga Dias, who in March announced superconductivity at room temperature and high pressure, but the paper had to be retracted eight months later due to difficulties in repeating the results.

Some studies are bogus from the start, creating "paper mills" - organizations that produce and sell bogus papers. Scientists often need publications to gain rankings, grants, and citations, and buying bogus papers seems easier than conducting real research. A Nature analysis found that about 1,5-2% of all papers published in 2022 appear to be fake, and in the biological and medical fields this proportion reaches three percent.

In 2023, the number of retracted articles increased sharply, reaching more than ten thousand. Most of them belong to Hindawi magazine, which has previously been involved in scandals over "paper mills". Wiley, the publisher's owner, said it would stop using the Hindawi trademark and implement strict measures to verify the identity of editors and monitor manuscripts. These actions are aimed at eliminating fake articles from the publication process. However, fake Hindawi articles, despite reviews, received a significant number of citations, indicating the difficulty of combating this problem.

Analysis of the Retraction Watch database shows that the total number of retracted articles has exceeded 50 thousand, and this figure continues to grow faster than the number of new publications. Countries leading in the number of retracted articles include Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Russia, China and Egypt. Approximately a quarter of the retracted articles were from scientific conferences.

The problem of fake scientific articles remains relevant and requires urgent measures to tighten control over publications. Improving the process of verifying the authenticity of results and supporting initiatives aimed at detecting paper mills are necessary to maintain the trust of the scientific community and preserve the value of scientific publications.
