Focus Description:

You have a fan in your hands. Open it completely and show it on both sides. Both of its sides are the same, dark, in addition, each of them has a light pattern. Just for a moment fold the fan and open it again - the sides of the fan have changed color! Both sides of the fan became completely light. Moreover, the drawing turned its color - from light to dark.

Focus secret:

Changing the colors of the fan is very simple. In figure a, it is easy to see that the fan on the left is turned in one direction, and the fan on the right is turned in the other. This is the secret of the color change, since the fan consists of planks painted in two colors (fig. b - both on one side and on the other).

Focus Amazing fan

The slats are interconnected by a thread, and the pitch of the thread (the distance between the individual slats) must be less than the half-width of the slat, since without this the fan will not have an even color coverage.

The most extreme strips during turns (shown by arrows in Fig. a) remain completely open, so their color can be left, for example, white. The same drawings of the corresponding colors are applied to the planks with the fan open.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Innovative lidar Velodyne VLS-128 02.12.2017

Velodyne has unveiled an advanced lidar that is expected to take the capabilities of automotive self-driving systems to a whole new level.

Lidar is one of the key elements of the autopilot in its current form. This device uses a laser emitter to scan the surrounding space. Based on the information about the reflections of the rays, a three-dimensional map is compiled - with its help, the exact distances to certain objects around the car are calculated.

Until recently, Velodyne's most powerful lidar was the HDL-64 with 64 laser beams. In the new device with the designation VLS-128, the number of beams is doubled - up to 128. At the same time, the dimensions were reduced by 70%.

The new generation lidar allows you to form a map of the surrounding space at a distance of up to 300 meters - this is significantly superior to its predecessor. In addition, the resulting resolution has increased. The device is suitable for use in various climatic conditions, including dry regions and regions with high rainfall.

The new lidar has such high performance and accuracy that, in fact, it is able to replace all other sensors in the autopilot system.
