How to heat it up? Yes, type in a large saucepan and bring it to the kitchen. The kitchen is warm and the snow will start to melt. Pour some water on a stool and put a pot in this puddle. After a while, try to raise the pan. Frozen? Of course not. After all, the kitchen is warm, and the snow melts even in the pan itself. Well, what if you stir the snow in the pan with a stick? Though a rolling pin, even deaf. Still won't freeze.

But there is still a way to freeze the pan. Throw a full handful of salt into it. Now, if you stir well and do not move the pan from its place, it will freeze! The snow in the pan will still melt, but ice will form under its bottom.

Isn't it a mysterious experience? But the mystery can be easily clarified if you have an outdoor thermometer, that is, one that shows not only plus, but also minus temperatures. Dip it into the pan so that the ball touches the snow. Before salt is added, the thermometer is at zero. It should be so, because it was the temperature of melting snow and ice that was agreed to be considered zero. But after adding salt, the thermometer will already show a minus temperature. If, for example, one hundred grams of salt are added to three hundred grams of snow, the mixture will melt at 18° below zero! It is clear that at this temperature, pure water under the pan will freeze.

You may have seen how in big cities the pavements are sprinkled with salt when the ice is icy. It's cold outside, but the ice on the sidewalk is starting to melt! And then sprinkled with ashes. It also contains various salts. And the ice turns into a wet, dirty mess.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Chips help assemble furniture 29.11.2002

Firm "Ikea" produces prefabricated cabinets with "checking" microcircuits.

Six motion and pressure sensors are built into each wall of such a cabinet, connected to a microcircuit, which is also built into one of the walls. If the person assembling the cabinet mounts something incorrectly, the sensors detect it, and the microcircuit sends a warning signal to the screen of a special monitor.

The device runs on batteries and is activated by light, that is, only when all parts are removed from the boxes. This eliminates the unnecessary consumption of battery power during the pre-sale storage of furniture.
