64-layer 3D NAND 512Gb chips

07.02.2017

Western Digital has announced the start of pilot production of 64-layer 3D NAND memory microchips (BICS3) with a capacity of 512 Gbps. These are the first products of this type in the world. The chips are made using TLC technology - three bits of information in one cell. Toshiba specialists took part in the development of the solution.

The microchips are manufactured at a facility in Yokkaichi, a special city in southeastern Japan that belongs to Mie Prefecture. It is here that Toshiba and SanDisk semiconductor chip factories are located.

Mass production of 64-layer 3D NAND chips with a capacity of 512 Gbit Western Digital plans to organize in the second half of this year. The company first announced the introduction of technology for the production of 64-layer 3D NAND chips in the middle of last year. And in 2015, the company demonstrated 48-layer 3D NAND products.

At the end of last year, Western Digital revealed some details about its plans for the use and production of 3D NAND flash memory based on the BICS architecture. Western Digital is taking a cautious approach to using XNUMXD NAND and in the near future plans to use this type of memory only for various types of removable drives - SD cards, USB sticks, etc.

It is noteworthy that Toshiba, which promotes Western Digital in the field of NAND production, also did not announce a single SSD based on 3D NAND (except for a rather exotic SSD in a BGA package), and its close partner, Lite-On Technology (an SSD branded Plextor ), did not showcase its Toshiba 3D NAND drives.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

MSP430FR5969 - high-performance microcontroller with FRAM memory 02.05.2015

The MSP430FR5969 from Texas Instruments is an innovative microcontroller that uses FRAM instead of FLASH.

FRAM memory has an advantage over traditional FLASH memory for microcontrollers, which determines its reliability and ease of use.

Of the additional advantages, it is worth noting the possibility of using the FRAM-memory area as random access memory, and the size of this area is set by the user. Also, the developer can set the protection of certain areas of memory from different types of access (read / write).

The MSP430FR5969 integrates powerful analog peripherals, including a 12-bit ADC with voltage reference and a 16-input analog comparator. For communication with external devices, the controller provides UART, SPI, I2C interfaces, as well as an IrDA modulator for use in data exchange interfaces using infrared radiation. The UART and I2C interfaces can be used to program or update the controller software using the BSL bootloader. All GPIO pins support CapTouch capacitive sensor technology.

A significant advantage is the presence of the MSP-EXP430FR5969 debug board with the EnergyTrace ++ tool implemented on it.

EnergyTrace++ is the only technology that allows you to track the consumption of the microcontroller, the operating mode of the core and the status of each of the peripheral modules in real time. This allows for maximum optimization of the system's power profile and improves the efficiency of the microcontroller software.

The MSP430FR5969 is ideal for applications that frequently overwrite data in the ROM area and for long battery life applications.
