Danish wind farms will meet UK needs

A historic step towards energy sustainability was taken when Denmark and the UK connected their energy systems using the nearly 800-kilometre Viking Link cable - the longest in the world.

The Viking Link cable was the first power source to link Britain to the mainland, providing the island with more affordable electricity. This energy is produced by Danish wind farms and meets the needs of 2,5 million households. The Viking Link cable capacity is 800 MW in normal operation, and can be increased to 1400 MW if necessary.

"The cable is capable of transmitting electricity in both directions, depending on the direction of the wind. When the wind blows from the west, the energy is sent to England, where the wind is weaker - to Denmark," the official statement said.

The Viking Link project begins in the Danish commune of Vaen in South Jutland and reaches the British coast 170 kilometers north of London. The main part of the cable runs under the North Sea.

These cables are expected to enable the UK to reduce carbon emissions by 100 million tonnes, and by 2030, 90% of imported energy through these cables will come from zero-carbon sources.

The Viking Link project is an example of successful energy cooperation between Denmark and the UK, benefiting both countries and contributing to a reduced carbon footprint and a sustainable energy future.
