Many radio amateurs use replaceable soldering rods of various designs when removing parts from a printed circuit board. Practice shows that soldering irons with solder suction are most convenient for this work. I propose another constructive version of the rod, designed to work together with a 90 W electric soldering iron and a vacuum pump (you can use a conventional single-action piston suction device instead).
In a standard copper soldering rod 1 with a diameter of 10 mm, a blind axial channel with a diameter of 2 mm and a depth of 31 mm is drilled from the side of the tip (see drawing). With the same drill, a side hole is made, 30 mm from the edge of the tip, until it is connected to the central channel. The drill during operation should be freed from chips more often and moistened with liquid oil.
Nozzle 2 is made of duralumin or brass with a hole 10,1 mm in diameter, the axis of which is shifted by 2 mm relative to the axis of the nozzle. A diametrical through hole with a diameter of 3,3 mm is drilled along the displacement axis, in which an M4 thread is cut from the side of a thin wall for a locking screw. From the side of the thick wall, the hole is reamed alternately with drills with a diameter of 4, 4,5, 5, 5,5 and 6 mm so that a stepped-conical recess is formed.
The nozzle is put on the rod and fixed with a locking screw in the position shown in the drawing. The sting is given a form convenient for work. A fluoroplastic pipe with a rubber elastic tube is inserted into the stepped recess, the second end of which is connected to a vacuum pump. In the process of using the device, the nozzle and tube are periodically disassembled and cleaned of the accumulating solder. In the same way, you can remake the rod of a forty-watt electric soldering iron.
