Despite the fact that connectors of various designs can now be found on sale, there are situations when not a single factory-made connector meets the task. There are also cases when purchasing a ready-made connector is more expensive than making it yourself.

I propose the design of a simple homemade connector that does not require scarce materials, is easy to use and fits well into the design of the instrument front panel. It has protection against erroneous docking and allows you to increase the number of pairs of contacts.

For the manufacture of the connector, you will need cuttings of double-sided foil fiberglass with a thickness of 1,5 or 2 mm and a factory-made multi-pin connector from the ShR series assembly (female and pin blocks), which must be disassembled and the pin and socket contacts removed (Fig. 1). Consider the process of manufacturing one pad for six contacts (three pairs).

Combination connector manufacturing

The basis of the node is a plate with dimensions of 40x20 mm double-sided foil fiberglass 2 mm thick. The foil on each side of the plate is divided (with a cutter or scalpel) by four slots into five strips parallel to the short edge. The width of the two extreme strips should be 5,5 mm, the three middle ones - 7 mm; the width of the slots free from foil is 2 mm. All dimensions are indicative.

The plates are soldered to the three middle strips of one of the sides along the pin contact from the ShR connector, having previously tinned their thickened shank. Three sockets from the ShR connector are symmetrically soldered to the same three strips of the other side. One of the connector blocks is ready.

If you make the same second block, the connector will be ready. Before soldering the pins and sockets of the second block, dock them respectively with the sockets and pins of the first, insert the prepared plate between the rows of shanks and solder - this will achieve an exact match between the blocks.

If one of the blocks needs to be mounted on the wall of the case, screw two steel corners to the extreme strips of the plate, and a decorative plastic panel with three pairs of holes to the corners. In each pair, the diameter of one hole is 0,2 mm larger than the diameter of the pin, and the other is 0,2 mm larger than the diameter of the socket. Therefore, it is possible to dock the pads in only one position. The view of such a block is shown in Fig. 2.

Combination connector manufacturing

The mutual placement of pins and sockets can be changed, providing the connector with new individual characteristics. If, for example, on one of the pads, the pins are moved back by 2 mm before soldering, the connector will acquire a new quality - the contacts of one row will always close first.

You can vary the distance between the pairs of contacts of the block and even, if necessary, between the contacts of the pair. To do this, the base must be made of two plates, foil-coated on one side, and fastened in parallel with screws, inserting washers between them. By changing the height of the washers, the distance between the contacts of each pair is changed.

The positive qualities of the connector should also include the high reliability of the connection, both electrical and mechanical.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

GPU chip design 28.12.2020

AMD has filed an application with the US Patent Office, in which it described the idea of creating a graphics processor with a chiplet structure. To do this, the company's engineers have to solve a number of problems specific to such a design.

Standard GPU programming techniques are ineffective for multi-GPU operation (which basically reflects the almost complete abandonment of Crossfire/SLI graphics bundles), as it is difficult to distribute parallelism across multiple active dies in a system. The paper describes one possible way to synchronize memory content across multiple GPU chipsets.

AMD believes that such problems could be avoided by implementing "passive, high-bandwidth cross-links." The first GPU chipset will be directly "communicated" to the CPU, while each of the chiplets in the array will be passively cross-linked to the first GPU.

In this sense, AMD sees passive crosstalk as a kind of wires between chipsets, placed on a substrate with one or more silicon interposer layers. Such a group of GPUs will work as a system on a chip, which is divided into different functional chips.

AMD has not publicly confirmed that it is working on a GPU chiplet design. However, there were rumors that the RDNA3 architecture could be implemented in multi-chip GPUs. As we know, the company has a lot of experience with such designs, especially in current Ryzen and EPYC processors.
