By placing a few bytes of program into an 8008/8080 microprocessor and using a 555 type integral timer, a system can be created that converts the potentiometer angle into a digital code. This method is convenient and advantageous to apply in cases where information about the position of the potentiometer is input to a system containing a microprocessor (process control systems, television games, etc.).

As shown in the figure, the microprocessor strobe pulse starts the 555 integrated timer, which is switched on in a standby multivibrator circuit. The time interval corresponding to a high potential at the output of the timer is proportional to the resistance of the potentiometer. To measure this period, the microprocessor increases the contents of the internal register as long as the potential of the integral timer at the input of D7 remains high.

Convert potentiometer angle to digital code

When the microprocessor needs to enter information about the position of the potentiometer, the program calls the POTPOS (potentiometer position) subroutine, which uses four flags, an accumulator and register B. As shown in the figure, the following microprocessor operations correspond to this subroutine:

1. Set register B to 0.

2. Enable timer 555.

3. Increase the contents of register B by 1.

4. Apply the state of IC 555 to the battery discharge input D7.

5. Set the negative value of the sign flag when the state is negative.

6. Return to step three with a negative flag.

7. Return to the main program if the flag is not negative.

Before returning to the main program, register B contains a number proportional to the IC 555's output pulse width and therefore corresponding to the angle of the potentiometer.

When using the program and hardware described above, in relation to a microprocessor with a clock frequency of 2,5 μs, the output code of register B changes from 2 to 65 (in hexadecimal code), i.e., provides 100 discrete values over the entire adjustment range of the potentiometer. The resistance of the potentiometer and the capacitance of the timing capacitor may vary depending on the speed of the microprocessor used and the specified dynamic range.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Creative Sound Blaster Series Headsets 15.06.2013

Creative Technology has unveiled the Creative Sound Blaster EVO ZxR and Sound Blaster EVO Zx headsets. According to the manufacturer, these are the world's first wireless headsets with built-in Sound Blaster SB-Axx1 multi-core processors. Processors are used to improve sound and sound correction when playing sound recordings, watching movies, playing games and voice communications.

The Sound Blaster EVO ZxR and Sound Blaster EVO Zx are said to be 'ideal for communication' when used with today's smartphones and tablets. They provide high-quality calls even in noisy environments, as they have arrays of microphones built into the earcups. The signal coming from them is used for active noise reduction and formation by the SB-Axx1 processor and CrystalVoice Focus technology of an acoustic zone around the user's mouth, free from noise. This feature is in demand for voice communication on the phone, through the Skype service and in games. Noise reduction with inNoiseReduction improves the quality of the incoming audio signal. Another interesting feature worth mentioning is CrystalVoice FX, which turns the caller's voice into the voice of a fantasy character.

The aptX and AAC Bluetooth codecs are used to transmit audio data wirelessly. The connection itself can be made instantly, by simply touching the mobile device (provided that it supports NFC). Wired connection is also available - via USB or analog input.

As for sound processing when listening to sound recordings or watching movies, the user can use proprietary technologies implemented in SBX Pro Studio and CrystalVoice software. Settings are controlled by Sound Blaster Central, available for iOS and Android. On PC and Mac, Sound Blaster EVO Control Panel performs the same function. You can also activate the SBX Pro Studio and adjust the volume level using the buttons on the headphones themselves.
The Sound Blaster EVO ZxR costs $300. It uses 50mm drivers. Sales of this model will begin in August.

The Sound Blaster EVO Zx costs $230. It uses 40mm drivers. Sales of this model will begin in July.
At the same time, more affordable models with 40 mm drivers are presented: Sound Blaster EVO Wireless and Sound Blaster EVO. They do not have an integrated processor, besides, only the first model has a wireless connection. The price of Sound Blaster EVO Wireless is $180, Sound Blaster EVO is $130. Both new items will be on sale in July.
