Once a truck driver lost control and knocked down a street light pole. The repair team replaced the pole and the "head" on it with a DRL lighting lamp. The old one was so mutilated that they did not even take it with them, but threw it nearby. I walked past and, in addition, carried a case with tools. I see a mangled lantern lying, I approached and asked. Everything turned out to be broken, the only exception was the throttle, which had a quite decent appearance. He took out the tool, unscrewed the mounting screws and took the throttle with him. It was released by a German company, the marking on it is 400 watts.

The throttle core, as it seemed at first glance, was W-shaped, the throttle coil was located on the middle core. Thin plates of high-quality transformer steel were fastened together with rivets. I drilled them out, took them out, but the "iron" did not undock until I unwound the throttle winding and sawed the frame. The plates turned out to be smeared on the ends with some kind of varnish; the core had to be washed with a solvent. Now I found that the core plates are solid and have a gap in the middle.

I decided to experiment with the core. With sharp scissors for metal, I made four cuts on each plate (shown in the figure), trying not to deform them. I assembled a new frame from fiberglass plates for the resulting core. Using a simplified formula, I calculated for him the number of turns per volt:

where w1 is the number of turns per 1 V; Sc is the area of the average core core (the width of the plate multiplied by the thickness of the set), see Fig.

I wound the necessary windings and assembled the transformer "overlapping", using cut strips from the plates as trailing ones. The overall power of the transformer turned out to be in the range of 300 ... 350 W, which is sufficient for many applications in the household of a radio amateur.

Transformer from DRL

Since the program for replacing street lighting with LEDs is gradually "untwisted", lamps with DRL lamps will remain "out of work", which means that there will be many such chokes.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

When Europe Was Deserted 16.03.2000

As new studies by paleobotanists and geologists from the University of Utrecht (Netherlands) have shown, about 250 million years ago some kind of catastrophe occurred in Europe, due to which the huge coniferous forests that covered the continent before died out.

In geological deposits, the number of fungal spores that live on dead wood has greatly increased. And again, living trees did not appear until five million years later. The cause of this mass extinction remains a mystery, although it is known that at that time the level of the oceans dropped dramatically and temperatures rose. Numerous volcanoes ejected about two million cubic kilometers of lava, which covered much of Siberia.

Not only forests died, but 95 percent of all species of organisms - more than in the extinction of dinosaurs, which occurred 65 million years ago. Perhaps almost all life was killed by suffocating volcanic gases.
