Nowadays, USB is the universal computer port to which a wide variety of devices are connected. A sufficiently powerful 5 V voltage source is output to USB, so many devices not only exchange data through it, but are also powered from the USB port. These are various scanners, webcams, portable CD or DVD drives, modems, etc. On the Internet, you can find descriptions of very stupid knick-knacks powered by USB - microvacuum cleaners, tea heaters, and even microcoffee makers.

In principle, many other peripheral devices can be powered from USB, even those not designed for this, but there are some limitations. In particular, by the supply voltage, which is only 5 V. Despite the fact that peripherals powered by their own network adapters usually require a higher voltage.

The figure shows a diagram of a simple adapter that allows you to increase the voltage taken from the USB port to 6 ... 15 V (depending on the resistances of resistors R5 and R6), provided that the load current does not exceed 150 mA.

USB port - 6-15 volt power supply

The circuit is based on a DC-DC boost converter based on the LM3578AM chip. Since the converter is a pulse converter, an inductance L1 is installed at the input, which prevents the penetration of impulse noise both into the computer circuit and from the computer into the circuit of the powered device, the A1 chip contains a PWM pulse generator and an output key. The key goes to pins 6 and 5. Pin 7 is the input of the protection control circuit, which determines the current through the key by the magnitude of the voltage drop across the resistance of resistors R2-R4. And when it exceeds the allowable value, protection is triggered.

The voltage pumping occurs on the inductance L2. Then this alternating voltage is rectified by the Schottky diode VD1 and smoothed out by capacitors C6 and C7. The output voltage is stabilized by comparing the voltage taken from the R5-R6 divider with the reference voltage generated by the stabilizer, which is part of the microcircuit.

Control input - output 1. The values of resistors R5 and R6 in the diagram are shown to obtain a nominal output voltage of 9 V:

  • for a voltage of 6 V - R5 \u47d 6K, R9,1 \uXNUMXd XNUMX kOhm;
  • for a voltage of 12 V - R5 \u110d 6K, R10 \uXNUMXd XNUMX kOhm;
  • for voltage 15 V - R5=130K, R6=9,1 kOhm.

In principle, you can get a different voltage by choosing the appropriate resistances of resistors R5 and R6. The ratio of their resistances should be such that, with the required output voltage, there is a voltage of 1 V at pin 1 A1.

Mounting the converter is most conveniently done on a small printed breadboard.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Highscreen Alpha R Full HD smartphone with a week of battery life 31.08.2013

Sales of the first budget Full-HD smartphone in Russia, Highscreen Alpha R, have started. The model is interesting not only for its display characteristics, but also for its long battery life: this is the first smartphone in Russia with such characteristics that can work up to seven days without recharging. The smartphone comes with two batteries of 2 mAh and 000 mAh, with the alternate use of which such a long battery life will be achieved.

Previously, only Highscreen Boost, the only smartphone in Russia with a 4 mAh battery, could boast of such autonomy. Scheduled for September, the Boost 160 model, according to our data, will have to set a new record for battery life - up to two weeks.

Highscreen Alpha R is equipped with a 5-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. OGS (One Glass Solution) technology is used: due to the absence of an air gap between the matrix and the sensor layer, viewing angles and "readability" in natural light are improved.

The hardware platform is represented by a 4-core MediaTek MT6589T ("Turbo") processor with a frequency of 1,5 GHz and a PowerVR SGX544 graphics chip (357 MHz). Recall that the standard version of this processor has a CPU with a frequency of 1,2 GHz and is accompanied by the same version of PowerVR "graphics", but operating at a frequency of 286 MHz. There is also 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of file storage space. There is a slot for microSD cards up to 32 GB. For taking photos and videos on the smartphone, the front 2-megapixel and rear 8-megapixel cameras are responsible. Two SIM cards are supported.

Highscreen Alpha R is running the latest version of Android 4.2.1 - the merit of the chipmaker represented by MediaTek. The smartphone is not burdened with a major change in the shell of the system. There is access to the 4Sync cloud service - Highscreen Alpha R owners exclusively receive 20 GB of content storage. As a standard, the service provides only 15 GB free of charge.

Highscreen Alpha R is sold in two body colors: white and black. The price of the model is 12 rubles. For comparison, the dual-SIM Full-HD-smartphone HTC One Dual SIM costs almost 990 rubles.
