AC adapters are often used to power portable equipment at home. This is not always convenient, since there is not always a free power outlet at the place of use. And if you need to have two or three different power sources? One solution is to make a universal power supply, if possible, and use, for example, a computer USB port as an external source.

As you know, the standard USB connector provides power for external devices with a voltage of 5 V at a current of about 500 mA. Unfortunately, most portable equipment requires 9 or 12 V to operate. The advent of specialized voltage converter microcircuits greatly simplifies the task of creating power supplies with the necessary parameters.

On fig. Figure 8.1 shows a diagram of a power supply option that allows you to get 9 or 12 V power from a 5 V USB port.

The basis of the circuit is a specialized microcircuit MC34063 (the Russian analogue is K1156EU5). The MC34063 chip is a DC / DC converter control circuit. It contains a thermally compensated voltage reference (RTF), a comparator, a variable duty cycle oscillator, a current limiting circuit, an output stage, and a high current switch.

This chip is specially designed for use in boost, buck and inverting converters with a minimum number of elements.

The voltage received by the boost converter is determined by two resistors - R2 and R3.

The selection of resistors is carried out on the basis that the input of the comparator (pin 5) should have a voltage of 1,25 V. The calculation of the resistor values for the circuit in fig. 8.1 can be produced according to a simple formula:

By setting the output voltage and the value of the resistor R3, you can easily calculate the value of the resistor R2.
The figure of the printed circuit board of the converter is shown in fig. 8.2, the layout of the elements is in fig. 8.3.

Since the output voltage is set by a resistor divider, you can improve the circuit by adding a switch to it, allowing you to receive different voltages as needed. A version of the converter for two output voltages (9 and 12 V) is shown in fig. 8.4.

Resistors used in the device - any, with a power of 0,125 to 0,5 W, type MLT or C2-29, non-polar capacitors - type KD, KM, K10-17, etc. Electrolytic capacitors - type K50-29, K50-35 or similar. The inductance of the inductor L1 is 120-180 μH, with a power dissipation of at least 200 mW. As a choke L2, an integral inductance of the EC24 type or similar is used. The inductance of this inductor is from 10 to 33 uH.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Euclid telescope launched 05.07.2023

The Euclid spacecraft of the European Space Agency was successfully launched into orbit by a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle. The primary goal of the mission is to investigate the causes of the accelerated expansion of the universe, a phenomenon known as "dark matter" and a mystery to scientists.

Euclid's high-tech telescope is expected to produce a detailed map of the cosmos covering about a third of the celestial sphere in order to map the location of millions of galaxies and measure the average distance between them - this is one of the factors associated with the influence of dark energy.

The Euclid sighting system will observe galaxies as they were 3 billion years ago (currently the universe is about 13 billion years old), as light takes time to reach Earth from distant objects.

In addition, the spacecraft will study dark energy and mark on the map the presence of a mysterious cosmic phenomenon - dark matter. Dark matter is present in the Universe five times more than ordinary matter. Although dark matter does not absorb or reflect light, scientists will be able to detect it due to the gravitational effect on "ordinary" matter such as stars and galaxies.

Within a month, the spacecraft will cover a distance of 1,5 million kilometers, then come to the Lagrange point L2, located on the other side of the Sun, where it will meet with the James Webb telescope.
