Household welding transformers with a power of 2,2-3,3 kW, made independently, during welding, cause a decrease in the mains voltage at a load of several volts (the network "sits down"). This leads to the dimming of the lighting lamps and affects the operation of the radio equipment, which causes criticism from the neighbors, whose houses are supplied with voltage through one line.

It is possible to reduce fluctuations in the mains voltage using a capacitor connected to the primary winding of the welding transformer (Fig. 1), the capacitance of which depends on the power of the welding transformer.

Reducing fluctuations in the supply network during welding

When choosing the value of the capacitance of the capacitor, it is necessary to use the graph shown in Fig. 2.

Reducing fluctuations in the supply network during welding

If you change the value of capacitance, the current of the primary winding of the transformer changes. This current has a minimum value at a certain capacitance of the capacitor C1 (the case of parallel resonance of the primary winding I and the capacitance of the capacitor C1).

Curve 1 corresponds to the no-load current, and curve 2 to welding. When welding, the consumed current increases, which at the same mains voltage and a constant frequency indicates a decrease in the inductance of the primary winding. Curve 2 is more flat - the quality factor of the circuit is the smaller, the lower the inductance. Point "a" of the intersection of the two current curves gives the optimal capacitance value. The current consumed from the network during welding will be almost equal to the current at the break of the welding arc. The practically optimal capacitance is determined as follows: a capacitance is connected to the primary winding and the current in the common circuit is measured. If the current consumption increases when the arc is ignited, then the capacitance should be increased.

With an accurate selection of capacitance, it is possible to achieve a constant current consumption with a welding arc and its absence. Capacitors should be used of the type MBGO, MBGV, K75-11 for an operating voltage of at least 600 V at a mains voltage of 220 V. The capacitance value is about 50-100 microfarads (depending on the power of the welding transformer).

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Thyristor protection components 26.04.2009

ON Semiconductor has introduced a new series of Thyristor Protective Devices (TSPDs) for telecom circuits. These devices provide excellent protective properties, are small in size and have a low self-capacitance.

The NP0080, NP0120, and NP0160 microcircuits are produced in the TSOP-5 package, have a differential capacitance up to 3 pF, and are capable of withstanding current up to 50 A for 8...20 µs. They are used to protect the line between the DSL transformer and the subscriber, as well as in data access devices.

Another series of thyristor protection devices NP-MC is manufactured in SMB package, has capacity up to 30 pF and current up to 100 A. These products are offered as an alternative to gas discharge fuses. Due to their low capacitance, they introduce minimal distortion into equipment such as VDSV2+ and T1/E1 circuits.
