All silicon solar cells generate an electrical voltage of about 0,5 V. As for the current, it depends on the intensity of the light and on the size of the cell.

Figure 1 shows the characteristics of the solar cell (the current is shown in arbitrary units).

Solar cell connection laws

The illumination level of 100 mW/cm2 corresponds to the direct flux of solar radiation at noon. It follows from the characteristic that with an increase in the load current, the voltage at the output of the element decreases until, at a certain current, it drops to zero. This current is called short circuit current. Unlike other power sources, short circuiting a solar cell will not damage it.

To increase the voltage, the solar cells are connected in series. It is clear that in this case the current of the garland is determined by the element with the smallest current.

To increase the current, the solar cells are connected in parallel. In this case, the output voltage is determined by the element with the lowest voltage. Thus, for real applications, solar cells have to be connected as a parallel connection of series strings. This combination is called a battery.

When working with solar panels, they encounter a phenomenon that does not occur when using conventional power supplies. This phenomenon is called reverse bias. Let's assume that there is a set of series-connected solar cells loaded with a resistor. A total voltage is released across the resistor, and current flows through it. If one of the elements is darkened at the same time, then the following will happen. A solar cell that does not produce electrical energy turns into a link with a lot of resistance. Now the entire voltage of the chain is applied not to the load, but to the darkened element. As a result, the element heats up and may fail (explode). To solve this problem, it is necessary to connect a diode in parallel to each element so that it is locked during the operation of the element (Fig. 2).

Solar cell connection laws

If now one of the elements is shaded, then the diode parallel to it begins to conduct current around the faulty element. The output voltage of the circuit will decrease, but the shaded element will not fail.

In practice, it is impractical to shunt each battery cell. It is enough to use 4-5 diodes for 1/4 or 1/5 of the battery. Then, when shading, the voltage will decrease by 20-25%.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Frost protection for LED headlights 13.11.2020

The Finnish company Canatu announced the creation of a film that will help protect the LED headlights of cars from freezing.

Owners of cars with LED headlights will have a difficult choice - either put up with frosting on the optics, or attach a warm heated cap on top. More and more modern cars are switching to LED optics - such headlights have become an attribute not only of premium models, but also of quite budget cars. And all owners suffer from one problem - freezing headlights in cold weather.

Car headlight lenses are made of plastic, which does not allow them to be equipped with a heating system, which can lead to deformation or clouding of the element. The heat emitted by halogen or xenon incandescent lamps is sufficient to heat the lens and, while maintaining its integrity, prevent snow from freezing while driving.

LEDs, which are energy efficient, do not emit as much heat, so headlights covered with dirt or snow in the cold become covered with ice crust. If the optics are not equipped with a powerful washer, then the headlights quickly lose their transparency.

The Canatu CNB solution, developed by Finnish specialists, is designed to solve this problem, which is a transparent plastic cap with a heated film built into it. Technically, it is possible to make Canatu CNB of any shape, which will allow it to be installed on top of standard LED headlights without compromising their efficiency, but protecting them from freezing.

Canatu CNB can be adapted for radar, lidar, video cameras and other elements of the unmanned driving system - traditionally, these numerous sensors are also subject to pollution and freezing, which reduces safety while driving. Therefore, the company believes that their warm film will help the creators of the autopilot.
