In our time, when many have acquired a summer house or a house in the village, where welding is a necessity, there is a problem with its acquisition. Buying a factory device is complicated by its high cost.

The most time-consuming part is the manufacture of the welding transformer itself. At the same time, the manufacturer is faced with the problem of acquiring a magnetic circuit.

The following requirements are imposed on the magnetic circuit:

  • sufficient cross-sectional area of the magnetic circuit;
  • less weight;
  • maximum efficiency of the transformer when using one or another core;
  • the magnetic circuit must have a sufficient window area for laying the transformer windings.

Consider a method for manufacturing toroidal magnetic circuits for high power power transformers with given dimensions, a window for windings and a cross-sectional area.

Magnetic circuits are made from various rectangular sheets of transformer steel with a ratio of sheet width to length of approximately 1:4 - 1:10 and a sheet thickness of 0,1 - 0,7 mm. These sheets, as a rule, remain after dismantling of very powerful power transformers. In addition to the indicated transformer sheets, a medical tourniquet, epoxy glue and two cylindrical smooth bodies are also needed: one with a larger diameter, the other with a smaller diameter with a diameter ratio of 3:1. Approximately it can be 2- or 3-liter glass jars and a half-liter glass bottle. The diameter of the large cylinder must correspond to the diameter of the window for laying the transformer windings (photo 1).

The whole process can be conditionally divided into a number of stages.

1. The plates are wrapped around the smaller cylinder in turn.

2. The tourniquet is cut off and its ends are sewn together so that, putting it on a large cylinder, the tourniquet is stretched.

3. The plates pre-formed on the small cylinder are placed between the large cylinder and the bundle, after putting the prepared bundle on the large cylinder. The plates are laid in a clockwise direction tightly one after the other (photo 2).

4. After laying 5 - 7 plates, a large cylinder is taken by the base and, pressing the tourniquet against a hard surface (table), the stacked plates are rolled. At the same time, the cylinder itself is rotated inside the plates. This stage is completed after the plates are tightly fitted to each other (photo 3).

5. Then the next 5 - 7 plates are inserted, and the process of their rolling is repeated similarly to step 4. Laying and fitting the plates to each other continues until the width of the formed torus corresponds to the calculated one (photo 4).

6. Then, on the end side of the stacked plates that form the width of the torus, the plates are covered with epoxide glue and left to dry. Thor is treated with glue on both sides (photo 5).

7. After the epoxy glue has hardened, the large cylinder is removed from the torus and the tourniquet is removed, while several extreme plates can be separated, they are removed (photo 6).

8. The resulting torus is placed in a cardboard casing, covered with cloth and varnished. After the varnish has dried, the transformer windings can be laid on the magnetic circuit.

During the laying of the plates (points 4 and 5), small gaps may form if the ends of the plates do not match. From experience it can be argued that they do not have a significant effect on the operation of the transformer. But it is necessary to try to keep them smaller.

If, according to the calculation, the magnetic circuit should be high, then several tori prepared in advance by the method described above are glued together with epoxy glue, placed one on top of the other.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Elusive ultralight oxygen discovered 12.04.2019

American researchers were able to synthesize a new type of oxygen - its ultralight isotope. Its half-life is extremely short, so that oxygen-11 can only be detected from the products of this process. The experiment and accompanying calculations by researchers at the Universities of Connecticut and Western Michigan produced two surprises.

First, a new chemical element decays with the emission of two protons at once. This is a rather rare type of decay, discovered quite recently. Second, oxygen-11 is the nuclear mirror of lithium-11. It has 8 protons and 3 neutrons, while in the heavy isotope of lithium, the nucleus consists, on the contrary, of 3 protons and 8 neutrons.

Such "mirror" elements have a number of interesting little-studied properties. They have the same spin and parity, and very close or identical binding energies. The specularity of nuclei is poorly understood, so the discovery of a new element, which is a "reflection" of the well-known lithium-11, will be an excellent tool for scientists.

The search for isotopes of known substances is of great benefit to fundamental science - physics and chemistry. Scientists discover new patterns and better understand the processes occurring with the participation of various chemical elements.
