The concept of "pond farming" ("headquarters government") in Ukraine is not just words. Once the ponds were sources of fish and fertilizers (sapropel). The ponds were also used for raising groundwater and energy-free irrigation "through the dam". In our area, the remains of small hydroelectric power stations and hydraulic motors (mills) are still preserved.

The local huge reservoir overthrows the whole river from a great height. Expensive water intake facilities are idle... The times of "gigantomania" are over, it's time to restore small hydropower. Today, many ponds and reservoirs have disappeared. Nobody collected fertilizers and the man-made lakes turned into swamps and overgrown. The groundwater level has dropped dramatically, reducing the productivity of the land and its ability to self-heal. Over the past 30 years, 5 thousand small rivers have disappeared in Ukraine! Many wells have lost water... Beavers (maybe this is funny to some) have also died out, and nature is no longer able to restrain the flow of fresh water to the sea with its own methods.

The consumption of artesian water for technical purposes increased, which aggravated the effect of droughts on agriculture through lowering groundwater.

Meanwhile, we have a good potential: in Ukraine there are 71 thousand large and small rivers with a total length of 248 thousand km, on which more than 10 thousand water intake structures have still been preserved. Although these facilities are little used, the total area of ponds and small reservoirs (excluding large ones) is 500 ha. The length of small (less than 10 km) rivers is 131 thousand km. There are 67 thousand of them, 94,4% of the total number of rivers. Of course, all this economy can completely "shower" us with energy, work, natural fertilizers and agricultural products.

Where to begin? I propose to use ready-made water pumps as engines for electric generators. If it is not possible to convert the "native" electric motor into a generator, you will have to put a real one. Do not forget that all autotractor generators rotate clockwise, and gearboxes with a pair of working gears change the direction of rotation to the opposite.

During experiments, you can use a large water valve (to turn off the hydraulic motor) and a gearbox (to select the optimal gear ratio). Then all this can be replaced or removed.

It is imperative to provide a lock in the dam for the passage of spring waters. The lock is also needed for partial descent of water during drying and collection of sapropel. In our forest region, ponds are also "procurers" of wood-fuel for rural houses.

We also need to think about how to "squeeze" unused energy into the grid.

Energy from the Pond: Return to the Future

I tried the circuit (see picture), it worked. The counter, invented by T. Edison (100 years ago), disciplinedly calculated my modest contribution to the country's energy, rotating in the opposite direction ...

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>
