A distinctive feature of this regulator is its ability to regulate the voltage when the input and output voltages are almost equal. (Most 3-pin voltage regulators require a difference between input and output voltage of about 3 volts for normal operation.)

To cater for situations where the two voltages are nearly equal, discrete components must be used. The BD140 transistor must be installed on a radiator, the power dissipated on the transistor is about 5-6 watts.

The output voltage level is determined by the formula Uo={(R4+R5)/R5}*Uzener.
