Entry level metal detectors

Such entry-level devices include metal detectors from several well-known manufacturers.

Russian productions:

  • RM (Resonance Metal Detector) from Technosfera LLC;
  • RMD (Resonant Discrimination Metal Detector) from Technosfera LLC;
  • AKA junior.

USA made:

  • ACE-150 and ACE-250 from Garrett;
  • Compadre and Silver uMax from Tesoro Electronics, Inc.;
  • Fisher 1212-X and 1225-X metal detectors; UK production
  • C. Scope CS220/330/660, CS1 M and CS2 MP;
  • Prizm (part of the line) by White's Electronics. Made in China
  • MD ZOYU, 5006, 5008 DTS. Australian productions
  • Minelab Musketeer Advantage.

Most metal detectors have similar characteristics and approximately the same search depth (Table 3.1):

  • 20-25 cm on a small-sized object such as a Soviet penny;
  • 80-100 cm - for large targets.

They are typical "coiners", that is, they are designed to search for small objects, for example, coins and jewelry.

There are pleasant exceptions, but they are characterized, as a rule, by large sizes of search coils (for example, AKA, MD and Minelab'a), which determines their great versatility.

It is worth noting several of the most attractive models that stand out from the general range, and well-proven devices:

  • Firstly, this is the Minelab Musketeer Advantage due to the successful design of the coil.
  • Secondly, this is the AKA "Junior", which is attractive because in terms of functionality it competes with foreign metal detectors, which are much more expensive.
  • Thirdly - Garrett ACE 250 due to ease of operation and excellent price/quality/functionality ratio.
  • Fourthly - White's Prizm II and White's Prizrn III, which, although more expensive, have a little more search depth (by 2-5 cm for small finds with standard coils).
  • Fifth - Tesoro Silver uMax is distinguished by its successful ergonomics.
  • Sixth - MD 5008 DTS, due to its low cost with an increased coil, is well suited for searching for medium and large metal (iron) objects at great depths without buying a specialized device.

Russian-made entry-level metal detectors

Metal detector RM (Resonant metal detector) and metal detector RMD (Resonance metal detector with discrimination) are the simplest devices with a small search depth. The difference between these devices from each other is evident from the name, it consists in the discrimination function, that is, the ability to respond to certain types of objects, for example, only to non-ferrous metals, and ignore others.

Both devices do not have a static search mode (in static mode, the sound indication of the device is triggered regardless of whether the coil moves over a metal object or not. The main search mode is dynamic search. The essence of the dynamic mode is that the detector detects objects only when the sensor moves device.

Consider the available switches

The RM has a single "On/Sensitivity" control, the RMD has an "All Metal/Non-Ferrous" switch and a Discrimination Level control.

The cost of such devices is approximately $150 and $250, respectively.

Russian-made mid-level metal detectors for beginners

AKA 7245 "Junior" is one of the most popular models among novice search engines, which, according to its capabilities, can be classified as a higher class.

It has an excellent depth of search, the function of high-quality manual compensation for the influence of the ground (or balancing). The essence of this important function is to reduce the influence of soil mineralization. Without proper balancing, the metal detector will not provide the optimal depth of search and the correct determination of the type of object.

Some devices are capable of:

  • or automatically adjust to ground conditions;
  • or initially set to its average type.

Among the important adjustments and modes, it should be noted:

  • the presence of gain and sound threshold controls (the minimum signal level from the target, at which the metal detector signals its presence);
  • various modes of discrimination;
  • dynamic and static search mode;
  • three-tone sound indication for various types of objects.

Let's dwell on the sound indication in more detail:

  • a low tone indicates the detection of small-sized ferromagnetic objects (nails, wire, fragments, etc.);
  • the middle tone indicates the presence of foil-like objects under the sensor of the device;
  • a high tone indicates the detection of objects made of non-ferrous metals, or large sheet-like objects made of iron.

The disadvantages of the device are: the large weight of the device; specific weight distribution "coil - electronic unit - battery", which requires some getting used to.

The cost of this metal detector is about $400.

Mid-range metal detectors made in China

The MD-3010 metal detector is designed to detect ferrous and non-ferrous metals located in the ground at shallow depths.

The identification of the detected target is indicated on the display by an icon. The display has 8 sections for visualization of detected objects: nails, corks, coins, gold, rings, etc. The device duplicates the detected target with one of 8 sound signals. It should be remembered that, as a rule, the icon on the display has nothing to do with a real find, but is used as a guide to objects of similar size.

The LCD display has a sectional indicator of the depth of the detected target. The device automatically adjusts the ground balance. It has advanced features for discrimination (exclusion) of unwanted objects.

The presence of discrimination is typical for devices with digital processing. You can also adjust the sensitivity and volume of the built-in speaker.

Price - $300.

The difference between analog metal detectors MD 5006 and 5008 DTS is:

  • the 5008 DTS has a remote battery pack (on the belt), which significantly increases the battery life;
  • The 5008 DTS has an additional large-diameter coil that allows you to search in depth (according to the manufacturer - up to 3,5 m for large objects).

At the same time, it should be said that in the deep search mode (with such a coil of an increased diameter), the discrimination of metals worsens. This is typical for the so-called deep metal detectors (as well as when using large diameter coils on "shallow" devices).

  • Otherwise, they are identical, each has:
  • a switch responsible for the modes of discrimination / detuning from the influence of the ground;
  • potentiometers for setting the sound threshold, ground balance, discrimination and sensitivity (gain);
  • pointer indicator with zones for non-ferrous and ferrous metals.

Sound indication - single tone.

Price - $300 - $400.

Mid-range metal detectors made in the USA

ACE series metal detectors Garrett use microprocessor technology the same as more complex models, but with significant simplifications. This affects the time of "addiction" and ease of setup.

Garrett ACE 150 is the simplest model in the company's lineup. It is equipped with:

  • graphic identifier of the detected object, divided into 5 segments;
  • three-tone sound indication (low sound for iron, higher sound for objects made of non-ferrous metals and "bell ringing" signals the presence of a "coin-like" target);
  • target depth indicator;
  • three modes of discrimination;
  • sensitivity change button (4 segments).

The ACE 250 metal detector, unlike the ACE 150, is equipped with an accurate target detection mode (pinpoint or static mode). Also, the number of segments of the graphic scale (up to 12), sensitivity (8), depth is more accurately determined, the number of discrimination modes is increased to 5 with the ability to quickly create your own mask.

Both instruments (ACE 150 and ACE 250) can be equipped with additional oversized sensors (coils). This makes their use more versatile (for example, with a coil of small diameter it is convenient to search in places heavily littered with iron. After all, in this case, closely spaced targets, for example, an iron nail and a coin, are better "distinguished", and a larger one is well suited for searching on a larger depth).

ACE 250 is one of the most popular models among novice search engines due to its excellent price / quality ratio.

The price is approximately $200 - $300 for the ACE 150 and ACE 250, respectively.

Consider the products of another North American firm, Tesoro Electronics Inc..

In general, Tesoro Electronics, Inc. produces very light devices (the models discussed below weigh about 1 kg) and with a lifetime warranty.

Compadre and Siver can be safely attributed to Tesoro budget models μMax.

The Compadre is designed around the "less is more" principle. It works only in dynamic mode and automatically balances itself from the ground. It has a single discrimination level control/switch with a wide range of settings.

The cost is $300.

Silver μMax already uses microprocessor technology, has three controls:

  • three-position switch of operating modes "all metals / discrimination / battery test";
  • discrimination level regulator;
  • sensitivity control/switch.

A larger diameter spool is also used (the use of other, interchangeable spools is not possible). This metal detector is quite highly rated by users.

The cost is $300 - $400.

Consider a few devices of the company Fisher.

The Fisher 1212-X metal detector is the simplest device in the company's line. It has a single control, a discrimination level knob/switch, which provides full range discrimination from reaction to all metals to the maximum level. The coil is non-replaceable, there is no static mode.

Cost $400.

The Fisher 1225-X metal detector is more advanced. It already has a static detection mode, sensitivity and battery test controls, as well as the ability to use several search elements.

Cost $500.

Now consider the metal detectors of the North American company Bounty Hunter.

Bounty Hunter metal detectors have long been widely used and discussed on forums. When looking at the design of these devices, the feeling of "toylike" does not leave, many users complain about the fragility of the design. But according to the declared characteristics, they honestly work out the money invested in them.

Among the models on our market from this category, there are several of the most popular:

  • VLF is the simplest device that operates in dynamic mode, has discrimination and sensitivity controls and is equipped with a dial indicator. Cost $250.
  • Tracker II - features automatic and manual ground balance, three discrimination circuits and a two-tone sound indication. Cost $200.
  • The Tracker IV is an easy-to-learn and use dynamic metal detector with a standard design for Bounty Hunter. It has two discrimination schemes, one of which is always on, and the other is switched on during the operational check of the detected object (range discrimination). Ground balance is automatic without loss of sensitivity. The pointer target analyzer allows you to obtain conditional information about the detected metal object, depending on its conductivity. Adjustable sound threshold and signal tone (sensitivity). Cost $250.
  • Quick Silver is a fully digital device with three discrimination circuits, automatic ground balance without loss of sensitivity, LCD display with 4-band digital identifier that allows you to get information about the likely detected metal object and three-tone sound indication. Cost $250.
  • Quick Silver Lone Star - a modern metal detector, has a 6-band digital identifier (coins, gold, nails, trash, etc.) and a digital indicator of discrimination modes. The rest of the parameters are the same as the previous models. The cost is $350.
  • Quick Draw II - already has 5 discrimination modes and an extended range digital ID. But, unfortunately, there is no static mode. The cost is $400.
  • Sharp Shooter II is the most advanced in the budget sector. In addition to the basic functions expanded compared to previous models (6 discrimination patterns, depth measurement, nine-segment target ID), a static search mode has finally appeared. The cost is $500.

Unfortunately, all devices, despite serious functional differences, have approximately the same sensitivity (approximately 20-25 cm per small coin).

Australian entry-level metal detectors

The Minelab Musketeer Advantage metal detector is designed specifically to search for coins, treasures in abandoned houses, basements and attics, lost jewelry on the beach. It is reliable, unpretentious, easy to use, equipped with many necessary functions.

Sensitivity is adjustable, there is a manual and automatic adjustment to the ground, there is a discrimination regulator and a function of the exact location of the target (pinpoint).

The Musketeer is available with 10" or 8" DoubleD searchcoils, which have a wider coverage area than conventional concentric sensors.

DoubleD coils have proven themselves only in low-litter areas, since with this technology, nearby objects are separated worse due to a wider radiation pattern.

The cost of this device is up to $350.

Metal detectors of entry-level and mid-level production in the UK

White's Electronics Prizm line of microprocessor-based metal detectors actually covers the categories of entry-level and mid-level devices. Consider, for example, the Prizm II and Prizm III models.

Indication of the settings and type of the detected object is carried out on the LCD display. All search objects are conditionally divided into 8 types, which are marked with a cursor during the search. When setting discrimination, you can sequentially prohibit the reaction to objects of the first five categories, starting with iron.

Devices can work both in dynamic and in precise detection mode in which you can search. There is a sensitivity adjustment. Among other things, the Prizm III model has an indicator of the depth of the object.

Prizm II is $400 and Prizm III is $450.

C.Scope CS220/330 metal detectors, in addition to a rather original design ("ergonomic", according to the manufacturer) and low price (less than $350), boast a sensitivity regulator and a discriminator, and the 330th also has a setting/cutoff iron debris button. There is no static mode. The coil is non-replaceable.

Metal detectors CS660, CS1 M, CS2 MP are almost identical to the previous models, but in more familiar cases. Differences - coils of increased diameter (20, 20 and 25 cm, respectively). There is a switch / regulator of sensitivity, discrimination, the CS660 model has a reset button (reconfiguration), the CS2 MP has the deepest search mode when the All Metals discriminator is installed. The cost of CS660 is $300, CS1 M is $350, CS1 M is $400, respectively.

Thin plasma emitters: a revolution in noise reduction 13.07.2023

The Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland has granted Sonexos a license to commercialize its active noise reduction technology using thin plasma emitters, which researchers have been working on for several years.

The EPFL research team has developed an ultra-thin active noise cancellation system using plasma emitters that ionize the air. Layers 17 mm thick are able to block noise at a frequency of 20 Hz as effectively as a 4-meter wall.

Active noise cancellation (ANC) is based on measuring sound waves with a microphone and creating anti-waves that counteract the sound. ANC works well in headphones and cars where the acoustic environment is relatively controllable.

ANC can also be applied indoors, but it requires a large number of speakers or a massive wall to suppress low-frequency, long-wave noise. What if the radiators were ultra-thin sheets and not massive diffusers? The EPFL Acoustic Group team has developed a noise reduction system based on ion plasma radiators, which are light, thin, easy to manufacture and economically affordable.

Emitters work like ion thrusters: they ionize the surrounding air using an electric field and create a plasma of positively and negatively charged particles. These ions are then magnetically accelerated and repelled by the surrounding air, creating a counter pressure. By changing the voltage, you can instantly adjust the amount of air pushed. Plasma speakers do not claim to compete with conventional speakers in sound quality, but they are very sensitive to voltage changes, due to the absence of a heavy membrane.

Previously, ion emitters have successfully demonstrated their effectiveness in suppressing high frequencies, but over the past few years, researchers have been able to achieve blocking and low sounds. The frequency of 20 Hz is the lower limit of human hearing, and the wavelength at this frequency is 17 meters. Ordinary acoustic materials would need about 4 meters in thickness to dampen this wave. However, the plasma layer can completely suppress this wave only with a thickness of one thousandth of the wavelength - 17 mm.
