In practice, it often happens that you need to repair, check or adjust the VGA monitor, but there is no personal computer. In this case, a simple VGA video signal generator on a PIC16F84 or PIC16C84 microcontroller is useful. The device diagram was designed by Eric Schlaepfer and is widely distributed on the Internet. Unfortunately, it contains an error (the microcontroller power pin number is incorrectly specified), and the attached "firmware" is intended for CGA/MDA monitors and does not work with VGA monitors.

I propose a corrected circuit (see the figure) and a program (the "firmware" codes are given in the table), adapted for VGA mode 640x480, 60 Hz.

The device can be powered from any source with a voltage of 4,5...5 V, including a battery of three galvanic cells or four Ni-Cd batteries.

During operation, the variable resistor R1 slider is set to the leftmost position and the power is turned on first for the monitor, and then for the generator. By slowly reducing the resistance of the inserted part of the resistor, a large inscription "TEST" appears on the screen. Setting a high image brightness is not recommended.
