I have tried many designs of devices for soft switching on incandescent lighting lamps. Some did not suit me with too large sizes and the number of parts, others required mandatory connection to both network wires, which is not very convenient with the existing electrical wiring in the apartment. Therefore, I decided to independently develop a simple small-sized device that can be included in the break of any of the wires going to the lighting lamps and placed in the installation box of a standard switch or in a chandelier cap. Its scheme is shown in the figure.

Soft start device for incandescent lamps

Here SA1 is an already existing switch that controls the incandescent lamp EL1. Further, we will talk about one lamp, not forgetting that there may be several of them, connected in parallel. It is important that the total current of the lamps does not exceed the allowable for the triac VS1, which, as shown in the diagram, is included in the break in the wire connecting the lamp to the switch.

Since at the moment of closing the contacts of the switch SA1, the capacitor C2 is discharged and the voltage across it is zero, the voltage applied to the symmetrical dinistor VS2 is also close to zero, and it is closed. Triac VS1 is also closed.

As a result of charging the capacitor C2, the voltage applied to the dinistor VS2 gradually increases, and it begins to open and open the triac VS1 in each half-cycle of the mains voltage for an increasing time. The brightness of the lamp glow gradually increases. To slow down this process, an integrator is connected in parallel to capacitor C2 on transistor VT1, covered by feedback through capacitor C3 and resistor R5.

With the ratings of the elements indicated in the diagram, the brightness of the lamp reaches a maximum 10 s after the contacts of the SA1 switch are closed. This value can be changed by selecting the resistor R5. Resistors R2 and R3 are needed to discharge the capacitors in parallel to which they are connected after the lamp is turned off, which prepares the device for a new inclusion.

The steady value of the voltage on the lamp is about 200 V at a mains voltage of 230 V. This slightly reduces its brightness, but significantly increases its service life.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

football virus 04.03.2001

Old man Hottabych once hit an entire football team with instant measles. A similar case is described in one of the latest issues of the New England Journal of Medicine.

On September 19, 1998, after an American football game between Duke University and the Florida Blue Devils, both winners and losers of the same day fell ill with a rather severe viral stomach disorder. The investigation of this medical incident was completed only in October last year and showed that the causative agent of the disease passed from one team to another with the ball.

The latest molecular techniques have made it possible to trace the path of the virus from two employees of the restaurant, which prepared cold turkey sandwiches for the players of one of the teams the day before the game, to the football players who ate this breakfast, and, finally, to the opponent's football players. Normally, this virus is transmitted with water or food, but here, according to epidemiologists, the transmission occurred through the leather cover of the ball.

In American football, as you know, the game is played mainly with hands. Obviously, the players did not wash their hands either before or after the game.
