Almost every radio amateur needs a generator and a frequency meter. On the pages of magazines, amateur radio designs on this topic were described. The proposed device is a "synthesis" of two designs [1, 2] with some modifications. This article does not provide a detailed description of the operation of circuits from primary sources, since they are completely finished designs and the authors describe in detail their work and setup methodology.

The function generator (Fig. 1) generates rectangular, triangular and sinusoidal waveforms. In addition, it also generates white noise and square wave TTL and CMOS levels.

The main parameters of the generator:

  • Frequency range ............................... 1...100000 (1000000) Hz
  • Number of subbands .................................. 5 (6)
  • Output signal amplitude:
  • rectangular ....................................... 10 V
  • triangular ........................................ 6,3 V
  • sinusoidal ....................................... 3,3 V
  • "white" noise ........................................ 5 V
  • Rise and fall times of rectangular pulses ... 0,2 µs
  • Harmonic coefficient in the AF range no more than .......... 0,3%
  • Output impedance at CMOS output .................... 600 ohms

In the author's version, the device has five subranges of frequency control. If necessary, you can add a sixth subrange (capacitor C14). Frequency adjustment within the subrange is smooth, carried out by resistor R3.

Details: DD1 K176IE5; DD2 K561LE5; DD3-DD8 - K176IE2. DD9-DD14 - K176ID2; DA1 K544UD2; VD1-VD2 KD512A; R1 1,6 k; R2 1,2 M; R3 15 k; R4 15 k; R5 15 k; R6 15 k; R7 150; R8 10M; R9 240 k; R10 15k, R11 15k, R12 8,2k; R13 15 k, R14 150; C1 0,22 uF; C2 0,22 uF; C3 50x16V; C4 100x16V, C5 100x16V, C6 27; C7 8.30; C8 2200, C9 1000; HG1-HG6 - AL304A; SA1 "Change / Check"; ZQ1 32768 Hz.

The frequency meter (Fig. 2) is made on microcircuits, has a self-control function, and a digital indication.

The main parameters of the frequency meter:

  • Measured frequency limits ....... 5...100000 (1000000) Hz
  • Sensitivity not worse than ......... 120 mV
  • Input impedance not less than ... 1 MΩ
  • Number of indicator digits ........ 5 (6)
  • Update rate ..... 1 Hz

In the author's version, the device has five digits of the indicator. In this design, the sixth digit of the indicator is added and the sound control of the measured frequency is excluded (R13, DD2.2, HA1 [2]). The device is powered by a power supply unit of the "step" type, assembled on integrated stabilizers according to the classical scheme (Fig. 3).

Ris.3

If it is necessary to measure a higher frequency, the device can be supplemented with a simple frequency divider (Fig. 4), assembled on TTLSH microcircuits [3, 4]. For the manufacture of this design, a Polish-made plastic case of the Z1 type was used.

Function generator with frequency counter
Ris.4

Details of the functional generator and frequency meter correspond to the author's description [1, 2]. The power supply uses a transformer T1 with a power of 15 ... 20 W (see Fig. 3), the voltage of the secondary winding is 27 ... 30 V at a current of up to 0,6 A (in the case of using a frequency divider). Diode bridge VD12-VD15 small-sized imported production for a current of 1,5 ... 2 A. Electrolytic capacitors imported. Switches SA1-SA3 small-sized type PG2-1-6 P1NT or similar imported. Imported "tulip" sockets were used as output sockets.

Stabilizers 7812, 7809 can be replaced by KREN12B, KREN12A, respectively. Stabilizers must be installed on radiators, especially 7824. K155 series microcircuits can be used in a frequency divider, but the current consumption will increase significantly. Adjustment of the generator and frequency meter circuits is described in detail in the author's versions [1, 2]. A correctly assembled power supply does not require adjustment. Adjustment of the frequency divider is carried out using a reference generator and a frequency meter, checking the frequency division factors. An oscilloscope looks at the output pulses of the frequency divider.

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Controlling objects using air currents 04.05.2024

The development of robotics continues to open up new prospects for us in the field of automation and control of various objects. Recently, Finnish scientists presented an innovative approach to controlling humanoid robots using air currents. This method promises to revolutionize the way objects are manipulated and open new horizons in the field of robotics. The idea of controlling objects using air currents is not new, but until recently, implementing such concepts remained a challenge. Finnish researchers have developed an innovative method that allows robots to manipulate objects using special air jets as "air fingers". The air flow control algorithm, developed by a team of specialists, is based on a thorough study of the movement of objects in the air flow. The air jet control system, carried out using special motors, allows you to direct objects without resorting to physical ... >>

Purebred dogs get sick no more often than purebred dogs 03.05.2024

Caring for the health of our pets is an important aspect of the life of every dog owner. However, there is a common assumption that purebred dogs are more susceptible to diseases compared to mixed dogs. New research led by researchers at the Texas School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences brings new perspective to this question. A study conducted by the Dog Aging Project (DAP) of more than 27 companion dogs found that purebred and mixed dogs were generally equally likely to experience various diseases. Although some breeds may be more susceptible to certain diseases, the overall diagnosis rate is virtually the same between both groups. The Dog Aging Project's chief veterinarian, Dr. Keith Creevy, notes that there are several well-known diseases that are more common in certain breeds of dogs, which supports the notion that purebred dogs are more susceptible to disease. ... >>

Milk quenches thirst better than other drinks 01.02.2024

A study conducted by scientists from Scotland reveals which drinks are most effective at quenching thirst. The results open up new perspectives in understanding the body's needs.

Milk, due to its composition, turns out to be the best drink to quench thirst, providing a long-term feeling of fullness. The study highlights the importance of drink selection to maintain optimal levels of hydration in the body.

Researchers at the University of St. Andrews analyzed the effects of various drinks on the body and found that water, although considered the standard, is not always the best choice.

The results of the work showed that milk is superior to water in quenching thirst. Due to the presence of sugar lactose, fat and protein in its composition, it helps the body retain fluid, which reduces the need to drink for the longest time.

Coffee also shows positive effects in fighting thirst, especially when consumed in moderation. However, be aware that caffeine may have a diuretic effect. On the other hand, alcohol, including beer, is not an effective thirst quencher, as it contributes to dehydration of the body.

New research allows us to make more conscious decisions about our drink choices and understand their effects on the body.
