The described smooth range generator (GPA) together with the base receiver. having a range of 28 MHz, and transverters designed by S. Zhutyaev - UW3FL (see "Radio", 1979, No. 1 and 1980. No. 10) allows you to create a simple VHF complex for the 144 and 430 MHz bands. For transmission, it can operate in CW and narrowband FM modes.

GPA to VHF transverters

The schematic diagram of the GPA is shown in the figure. It consists of a master oscillator (on transistor V7). working in the interval 14...14. 25 MHz, frequency doubler (V8), frequency modulator (on varicap V6), microphone amplifier (on transistors V1, V2), signal limiter on diodes V3, V4 and bass amplifier (V5).

When working in FM mode, the microphone is connected to connector X1. At the same time, the power supply circuit of low-frequency nodes is restored. A jumper is inserted into the sockets of connector X2. When working by telegraph, the microphone is disconnected, and a manipulator is connected to the X2 connector.

To transfer the VHF complex to transmission, it is necessary to close the contacts of switch S1. In this case, constant voltages of 28 V will be supplied to the transverter and 12 V to the remote antenna relay "reception - transmission". Relay K1 will work and with its contacts will connect the X4 socket to the GPA output.

The GPA frequency overlap range is set by selecting capacitor C15. required deviation - C14. Coil L1 is made on a frame with a diameter of 5 mm wire PELSHO 0,15. L2 - on a frame with a diameter of 6 mm with a PELSHO 0,41 wire; trimmers from the magnetic circuit SB-12a. The first contains 30, the second - 20 turns (branches from the middle). Chokes 1.3. L4 are wound on trimmers from the OB-30 armored magnetic circuit with PEV 0,1 wire (1000 turns). Connector XI - SG-5. Relay K1 RES49. passport RS4.569.423.

Editorial note. To ensure the operation of the GPA in the narrow-band FM mode, it is not necessary to insert a jumper into the sockets of the X2 connector. It is advisable to connect the top X2 socket according to the diagram with socket 3 of the X1 connector, and connect the pins 2 and 3 of the X1 connector to each other.

Smart tweezers for microbiome research 11.01.2024

Scientists at Mount Sinai School of Medicine are introducing an innovative tool, mEnrich-seq, that can be compared to “smart tweezers” for studying microbiomes. This technique, which focuses on bacterial DNA methylation, promises to revolutionize medical research by providing precise information about specific strains of bacteria in complex microbiomes. The potential applications of this tool in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases could be an in-depth exploration into the world of microscopic organisms.

Sequencing bacterial genomes has revolutionized the understanding of microbial organisms. However, analyzing entire microbiomes containing many different bacteria is a complex task comparable to distinguishing between musical instruments in an orchestra. mEnrich-seq addresses this issue by focusing on a signature feature—bacterial DNA methylation.

Each species of bacteria has unique chemical markers in its DNA, similar to human fingerprints. mEnrich-seq is designed to recognize these “secret codes” and highlight samples containing target bacteria, suppressing background noise in the microbiome.

In practice, mEnrich-seq has demonstrated impressive performance. Specifically, the tool successfully isolated and sequenced E. coli genomes from urine samples of patients with urinary tract infections, outperforming traditional methods with more than 99,97% genome capture and high sensitivity.

In addition to E. coli, mEnrich-seq was used to analyze Akkermansia muciniphila, a bacterium associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Now, thanks to this tool, the study of this rare bacterium is becoming more accessible, opening new perspectives in understanding its role in complex diseases.
