You can tune a sensitive amplifier or receiver using a noise generator - a device that generates oscillations in a very wide frequency spectrum, up to hundreds of megahertz.

A diagram of a simple noise generator made on a D810 zener diode (D808, D814A-D814G can be used) is shown in fig. 1. The generator mode is set by a variable resistor R1.

Noise Generator - Probe
Fig. 1

The output of the noise generator is connected to the input of the low-frequency amplifier under test, radio receiver, tape recorder or other radio engineering device. During normal operation of the device, a characteristic hissing sound will be heard in its loudspeaker.

By applying the signal of the noise generator to the input of the superheterodyne, it is possible to match its contours. When tuning a receiver with extended ranges, it is sufficient to pair the contours only at the middle point of the range: the receiver is tuned to the middle frequency of the range and the maximum noise level at its output is achieved. On survey ranges, conjugate contours are produced at the two extreme points of each range. In the short-wave part of the range, tuning is done by changing the capacitance of the input circuit, in the long-wave part - by changing the inductance of the input circuit.

Based on the noise generator, you can build a signal generator, the circuit of which is shown in Fig. 2. The entire frequency range of the generator 100 kHz - 27 MHz is divided into five subranges: 100-300 kHz, 300 kHz - 1 MHz, 1-3 MHz, 3-9 MHz, 9-27 MHz. The maximum voltage at the output of the generator is a few millivolts.

Fig. 2

Coils L1 - L5, together with a variable capacitor C3, form oscillatory circuits that highlight the frequencies that can be obtained at the output of the generator.

The generator coils are wound on frames with a diameter of 7,5 mm with SCR-1 tuning cores (used in TV IF amplifiers). The winding data of the coils are shown in the table.

Coils Number of turns The wire
L1 270 + 270 PELSHO 0.1
L2 260 PELSHO 0,12
L3 80 PELSHO 0,12
L4 30 PEV-1 0,2
L5 10 PEV-1 0,2

Coils L1 - L3 are wound in bulk, winding width 7 mm; coils L4 and L5 - in one layer, turn to turn. The variable capacitor can be of any type.

Set up the generator with the power off. The output of the generator is connected to the output of the reference GSS, and a lamp voltmeter is connected in parallel with the circuit. According to the maximum reading of the voltmeter, which will correspond to the resonant frequency of the circuit, the required subrange boundaries are selected and the generator scale is calibrated. Similarly adjust the contours of other subranges.

The principle of tuning receivers using the generator described here is the same as with the GSS. When tuning the circuits to certain frequencies, the signal is supplied from the "Output 1" terminal of the generator, and when pairing the circuits, from the "Output 2" terminal.

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Controlling objects using air currents 04.05.2024

The development of robotics continues to open up new prospects for us in the field of automation and control of various objects. Recently, Finnish scientists presented an innovative approach to controlling humanoid robots using air currents. This method promises to revolutionize the way objects are manipulated and open new horizons in the field of robotics. The idea of controlling objects using air currents is not new, but until recently, implementing such concepts remained a challenge. Finnish researchers have developed an innovative method that allows robots to manipulate objects using special air jets as "air fingers". The air flow control algorithm, developed by a team of specialists, is based on a thorough study of the movement of objects in the air flow. The air jet control system, carried out using special motors, allows you to direct objects without resorting to physical ... >>

Purebred dogs get sick no more often than purebred dogs 03.05.2024

Caring for the health of our pets is an important aspect of the life of every dog owner. However, there is a common assumption that purebred dogs are more susceptible to diseases compared to mixed dogs. New research led by researchers at the Texas School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences brings new perspective to this question. A study conducted by the Dog Aging Project (DAP) of more than 27 companion dogs found that purebred and mixed dogs were generally equally likely to experience various diseases. Although some breeds may be more susceptible to certain diseases, the overall diagnosis rate is virtually the same between both groups. The Dog Aging Project's chief veterinarian, Dr. Keith Creevy, notes that there are several well-known diseases that are more common in certain breeds of dogs, which supports the notion that purebred dogs are more susceptible to disease. ... >>

New low-level API will reduce the power consumption of ARM chips 13.04.2015

The market for wearable smart devices is growing, but its growth is constrained by the lack of any visible progress in the field of power supplies, and, as a result, a relatively short operating time. Developers understand this and are doing their best to reduce the power consumption of such devices.

ARM has taken a new step in this direction. ARM Cortex-M processors will receive a Silicon Labs EFM32 Gecko power management microcontroller and the corresponding low-level API.

Both companies, ARM and Silicon Labs, plan to use a bunch of these chips in a new generation of devices that form what is called the "Internet of Things" (Internet of Things, IOT). Unfortunately, Silicon Labs has not yet published details on exactly what level of savings it plans to achieve, but mentioned that the new API will allow for automatic smart sleep mechanism and power distribution depending on the level of activity of specific system components.

Preliminary tests of the "optimum sleep" system showed an impressive increase in efficiency: the LCD module consumed 1,03 milliamps before it was turned on, and after activation, the current it consumed in sleep mode dropped to 0,1 milliamps, that is, an order of magnitude. A very impressive achievement.

New software and hardware with such capabilities will be in high demand in the world of smartphones and tablets, however, for now, both companies will concentrate their efforts on its implementation in the world of the Internet of Things.
