Artificial cartilage is superior to real

22.08.2022

Scientists from Duke University (USA) have created the first gel-based cartilage substitute that is even stronger and more durable than real cartilage.

The hydrogel is made from water-absorbing polymers. It can be squeezed and pulled with more force than natural cartilage and is three times more resistant to wear and tear.

To make this material, the team filled thin sheets of cellulose fibers with polyvinyl alcohol - a polymer made up of thread-like chains of repeating molecules - to form a gel.

Cellulose fibers act like the collagen fibers in natural cartilage: they provide tensile strength to the gel. Polyvinyl alcohol helps it return to its original form. The result is a jelly-like material consisting of 60% water. It is flexible yet surprisingly durable. This material is attached to a titanium base, which is installed in place of damaged cartilage.

The laboratory cartilage proved to be 26% stronger than natural cartilage in tension, and 66% stronger in compression. Previously, in an attempt to create stronger hydrogels, scientists used the freeze-thaw process. It produced crystals within the gel that displaced water and helped hold the polymer chains together. The new study instead applied heat treatment - annealing - to force even more crystals to form in the polymer network.

By increasing the crystal content, the researchers were able to create a gel capable of withstanding five times the tensile load and almost twice the compressive load compared to freeze-thaw methods. The improved strength of the annealed gel also helped secure it to the joint and make it stay in place.

The artificial hydrogel mimics the smooth, slippery and pliable nature of real cartilage. At the same time, it protects other articular surfaces from friction when they slide over the implant. Its surface was three times stronger than the surface of real cartilage.

Implants made from the new material are currently being developed by Sparta Biomedical and are being tested on sheep. The researchers are preparing to begin human clinical trials next year.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Breathing out of control 30.09.2015

Training in the mountains or in a hall with a low oxygen content in the air increases the endurance of athletes. However, amateur athletes, doing amateur activities, can do much harm to themselves with such training.

This follows from the work of Spanish physiologists from the University of Barcelona, headed by Jesús Alvarez-Erms: they found that only a quarter of amateurs practice hypoxia under the supervision of doctors, and among professionals such 98%. The latter are very serious about the choice of food: for example, they consume a lot of iron during hypoxia in order to improve blood counts.

Amateurs come up with their own programs, which can lead to anemia, loss of muscle mass and other troubles. At the same time, amateurs are sure that hypoxia will help them improve their results by almost 40%, while professionals are less optimistic - they hope for 5-9%.

The scale of the problem in Spain is as follows: among professional cyclists surveyed, 89% train in low oxygen, and among amateurs - 19%.
