Any electrical product must meet two simultaneously valid protection requirements:

  • safe handling of the device, i.e. safety for the operating personnel;
  • protection of the device located in the housing from environmental influences.

IP rating is not a standard in the general sense, but its convenience is recognized throughout the world, so engineers and designers use the IP standard for evaluation instead of referring to any specific national standards and approvals. When complying with the IP standard, it is not specified what a particular case is made of and for, and chemically non-aggressive, such as sand and water, are considered as environmental factors.

The IP standard does not stipulate protection against aggressive environments and other serious requirements for equipment: to put it simply, the IP standard gives the concept of dust and moisture protection of a product. So, let's see what protective properties characterize the numbers in the title of the standard.

First digit gives the concept of the protection of the product from human contact with current-carrying parts and from the penetration of foreign objects into the product.

First digit Short title Protection characteristic
0 No protection Open design, no protection against dust, no protection of personnel from touching live parts
1 Protection against large objects Protection against penetration into the structure of large objects with a diameter of more than 50 mm. Partial protection against accidental contact with current-carrying parts by a person (protection against contact with the palm of your hand)
2 Protection against medium-sized objects Protection of the structure against penetration into objects with a diameter of more than 12 mm. Finger protection for live parts
3 Protection against small objects The design does not allow penetration into objects with a diameter of more than 2,5 mm. Protection of personnel against accidental contact with current-carrying parts with a tool or fingers
4 Sand protection Objects with a diameter of more than 1 mm cannot enter the structure. The design protects against touching current-carrying parts with fingers or a tool
5 Protection against dust accumulation Dust may enter the enclosure in a small amount that does not interfere with the normal operation of the equipment. Complete protection against touching the live parts of the equipment
6 Complete dust protection No dust can penetrate inside the structure

The second figure informs us about the degree of moisture protection of the product.

The second figure Short title Protection characteristic
0 No protection No splash water protection
1 Protection against drops falling vertically Drops of water falling vertically cannot cause dangerous consequences for the equipment
2 Drop protection at an angle Drops of water falling on the equipment at an angle of up to 15 degrees do not cause dangerous consequences
3 Water splash protection The product is protected from water splashes entering the structure at an angle of up to 60 degrees
4 Protected against splashing water from any direction The design is protected from water splashes, which can be directed at the product from any direction
5 Water jet protection Jets of water, e.g. from a hose, do not harm the equipment housed in the enclosure
6 Water flood protection Filling the equipment with water does not cause damage to the equipment
7 Immersion protection The case can be completely submerged in water, which does not damage the equipment housed in the case
8 Protected against immersion in pressurized water The design withstands immersion in water to a certain depth without consequences (protection against water under pressure, and the pressure value is indicated specifically)

It is intuitively clear that the first digit (dust protection) should usually be higher than, or older than, the second digit (water protection).

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Cell division recreated outside the cell 29.05.2019

Cell division seems to many scientists and even ordinary people to be a fairly simple and understandable process - and on the one hand, this is true. However, the nuances of cell division, which is the basis for the development of life, continue to elude us. So a team of microbiologists at the University of Chicago in the US tried to answer some of these nuances by attempting to replicate the process of cell division outside the cell itself, in the laboratory - and, most surprisingly, they actually succeeded in doing this, and the division itself was no different from natural.

Experiments of this kind have been undertaken before, but all of them failed at one stage or another, mainly due to a lack of initial data and certain materials. Now, in the center of the new research, the specialists armed themselves with a new material and chemical base, and decided to do everything in a unique way. They literally "pulled" the active components of cell division out of it and placed them in an artificial environment that only remotely recreates the natural environment of the cell.

We are talking about the interaction of actin - a key protein for cell division - and myosin, which is a motor regulator protein that pulls genetic information from actin and forms a second cell. This is exactly what happened in the laboratory with specialists, and they note that actin, in its inherent biological manner, immediately arranged itself in a parallel way for the acceptance of myosin and further interaction with it - which is explained quite simply.

The fact is that such a parallel arrangement of actin is the most rational and logical from the point of view of avoiding any kind of danger or obstacle, since it is in this format that it is most convenient for it to communicate with the motor protein and begin the formation of subsequent cells.

Experts want to conduct an additional, control experiment with the repetition of conditions, but with a slight change in the given parameters, to improve the purity of the experiment.
