The main element of the AC welding source is specialized welding transformer. Let's get acquainted with the design features of these devices.

According to the shape of the core distinguish between transformers armored и pivotal types (Fig. 18.3). To reduce eddy current losses, the transformer core is made of sheet transformer steel with a thickness of 0,27-0,5 mm.

Rod Type Transformers, compared to armored transformers, have a higher efficiency and allow higher current densities in the windings. Therefore, welding transformers are usually, with rare exceptions, of the rod type.

By the nature of the winding device, transformers with cylindrical and disk windings are distinguished (Fig. 18.4).

To consider the features of a transformer of one type or another, it is convenient to use the equivalent circuit of a transformer (Fig. 18.5), where: U1, SHE IS2 - voltage on the primary and secondary windings of the transformer; r1, r2 - ohmic resistance of the primary and secondary windings of the transformer; L1s, L2s - leakage inductance of the primary and secondary windings of the transformer; Lμ - magnetization inductance of the transformer; Gc - resistance, characterizing the losses in the core of the transformer; n is the transformation ratio of the transformer.

In this case, all parameters of the transformer are given to its secondary winding. Therefore, in the equivalent circuit, there is no ideal transformer necessary to simulate the transformation ratio.

Leakage inductance Ls winding is caused by the presence of its own magnetic flux Фsnot interlocked with another winding. The farther the transformer windings are from each other, the greater the value of Fs and Ls.

In transformers with cylindrical windings one winding is wound on top of the other. Since the windings are at a minimum distance from each other, almost the entire magnetic flux of the primary winding is linked to the turns of the secondary winding. Only a very small part of the magnetic flux of the primary winding, called the leakage flux, flows in the gap between the windings and is therefore not connected to the secondary winding.

Current I1 limited practically only by active (ohmic) resistance and g2 windings, so the transformer has a rigid characteristic, and the short-circuit current on the secondary winding is more than 10 times the operating current of the transformer.

To obtain a steeply falling external characteristic, an AC choke is used, which was present in early welding sources as an independent structural element, which additionally increases the mass and dimensions of the welding source.

Later they began to use transformer leakage inductance. To obtain the required value of leakage inductance, the transformer windings began to be made in the form of disks (Fig. 18.4, b).

In transformers with disc windings, one winding is separated from the other. Since the windings are separated from each other, a significant part of the magnetic flux of the primary winding is not connected with the secondary winding. They also say that these transformers have developed electromagnetic scattering. Leakage inductance L1s and L2s have a significant value, and their reactance affects the current of the transformer to a greater extent than in the case of a transformer with cylindrical windings.

Using a transformer with disk windings, we can easily obtain the required falling external characteristic, where the operating current is ~ 80% of the short circuit current.

Welding current adjustment usually achieved by changing the distance between the windings, which are movable.

In domestic conditions, it is difficult to manufacture a transformer with movable windings. The solution to the problem in this case will be a transformer for several fixed values of welding current. For a finer adjustment of the welding current (of course, in the direction of decrease), you can use the inductance of the welding cable, laying it in rings.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

The impact of fast food on sleep and memory of adolescents 17.09.2021

The researchers studied the eating habits of high school students and found out how they affect the sleep of teenagers. The observation was carried out in 64 countries of the world and covered 175 adolescents.

Teenagers who frequently consumed carbonated water were 55% more likely to have trouble sleeping than those who drank less of these sugary drinks, according to a study by scientists. It is clarified that we are talking about about three drinks a day, compared to a friend reports.

An analysis of data from 175261 adolescents aged 12 to 15 showed that frequent consumption of unhealthy foods is associated with poor sleep quality, which in turn negatively affects their well-being, memory and cognitive abilities.

Also, experts noted that sleep disturbances were observed in children if they consumed fast food more than four times a week. At the same time, as the authors of the study emphasized, violations occurred in girls twice as often as in boys.

These results are of great concern, as poor quality sleep negatively affects the well-being and cognitive development of adolescents, commented study author Asad Khan.

Khan stressed that preventive activities should start in schools and families. In educational institutions, scientists recommend limiting children's access to soda and harmful snacks, and parents are less likely to buy them home and involve children in such a diet, especially if girls grow up in families.
