A luminous efficacy of more than 100 lm/W has actually been achieved. White LEDs have been created with a total color rendering index Ra of more than 80. The service life of serial LEDs has reached an average of 50 thousand hours, and according to some companies, even 100 thousand hours. The unit power of LEDs has reached 10 W.

The cost of LEDs decreases quite quickly (for example, headlamps with 9 white 5 mm LEDs with a power of about 0,04 W each are available for sale at a price of only 100 Russian rubles (including batteries). That is, the price of one white LED in these lamps does not exceed 5 rubles, while only four years ago it was about $ 5). Several billion LEDs are produced annually in the world. China, together with other countries of Southeast Asia, has become the undisputed leader in terms of production in this area.

But in the production of high-quality high-performance LEDs and crystals for them, the leader is the American company Cree (cree.com), which was the first to start making LEDs on a substrate not from sapphire or silicon, but from silicon carbide (SiC), which has a significantly lower thermal resistance, using in light-emitting crystals of gallium and indium nitrides (Fig. 4.14, Fig. 4.15). This made it possible to increase the luminous efficiency of white LEDs up to 80-100 lm/W.

It should be noted that today such large manufacturers as OSRAM Opto Semiconductor, Seoul Semiconductor, LedEngin, dison Opto Corporation, Avago Technology and many others produce their LEDs based on Cree crystals. In turn, the company Lumileds (PHILIPS) does not lag behind the leader, having recently released a new line of Luxeon® Rebel LEDs (Fig. 4.16 - Fig. 4.19).

The luminous flux of Luxeon® Rebel LEDs, in particular the LXML-PWC1-0100, is 100 lm at a current of 350 mA and 180 lm at a current of 700 mA. That is, at a current of 350 mA, the light output is approximately 100 lm/W. Interesting LEDs for local and general lighting are also produced by OSRAM Opto Semiconductor. The luminous flux of the OSTAR LED is 1000 lm (Fig. 4.20).

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

The secret of the evergreen spruce is revealed 01.01.2021

Scientists have managed to solve the mystery of conifers and find out why they stay green in winter and summer. Many people know that, due to their smaller surface area and denser skin, the needles of fir trees are more resistant to low temperatures than the leaves. They are also protected by a layer of wax.

A team of scientists from Sweden, the Netherlands and Canada has conducted a new study of conifers growing in the cold. At the same time, for the purity of the experiment, the study took place on the street. As a result, they managed to decipher the mechanism of photosynthesis in coniferous plants. In winter, spruces switch to a special mode that protects photosynthetic proteins from damage.

The fact is that in winter, due to frost, many biochemical reactions of plants slow down. Tree needles absorb sunlight, but the process of photosynthesis has a shorter cycle and cannot reach the end.

Also, the very internal structure of the firs has a special appearance. Unlike deciduous plants, conifers have two apparatus for photosynthesis. At high temperatures, photosystems I and II are separated from each other to ensure an efficient process. In winter, the second begins to transfer its energy to the first.

Such a device helps conifers survive in harsh climates, as well as maintain their green needles at any time of the year.
