To turn on the discharge lamps in the network, special devices are needed, called ballasts. A very small number of types of lamps can work without ballasts, and, as a rule, they are unsuitable for lighting.

Ballast - load, the function of which is not directly related to the purpose of the device. A ballast is a resistor in series with the lamp that deliberately limits the current flowing through the lamp.

For a discharge lamp to work, all that needs to be applied is a voltage, and a current must flow through it. The lamp is the so-called non-linear load with decreasing characteristic: the higher the voltage applied to the lamp, the lower the current through it, and vice versa.

Attention! When we turn on the lamp directly into the network, the current through it begins to grow like an avalanche, and the voltage between its electrodes drops! In fact, such a lamp short-circuits the network, as a result of which the network is overloaded, and the lamp goes out.

If you turn on the resistance in series with the lamp, the network will not be short-circuited, but to this resistance. There will be no overload and the circuit will work normally.

Various electrical components can act as resistance:

  • on direct current - resistors;
  • on a variable - resistors, inductors and capacitors.

The most successful ballast for LL is a choke, not a resistor or capacitor. It is advantageous to use an inductor instead of a resistor: it has a so-called reactance, on which unnecessary heat is not generated. It is dangerous to use a capacitor (it does not limit the initial current pulses either in the network or in the LL).

The industrial design of an inductor with a metal core is called a choke. This is the most common type of discharge lamp ballast. Due to the obligatory presence of a ballast in the circuit, the LL switching circuit turns out to be relatively complex compared to conventional incandescent lamps.

Hack and predictor Aviator. To include in the network of any gas discharge device, including LL, it is required current limiter, without which there will be an avalanche increase in the current in the lamp bulb and, possibly, explosion (!). Even if this does not happen, the lamp will still be instantly damaged.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Recycling disposable masks into fuel 08.08.2020

The quarantine measures associated with the coronavirus pandemic have shown the world how much a person affects the environment. However, along with positive changes, noise reduction, water and air purification, our planet has also faced negative consequences. Namely, with a huge amount of waste of personal protective equipment (PPE). Now, scientists at the University of Petroleum and Energy Research in India say plastic from PPE can be converted into a renewable fuel.
Scientists propose to recycle disposable masks into fuel

The experts proposed a strategy that could help mitigate the problem of discarded PPE. Currently, the number of disposable masks has increased dramatically, and scientists say that this is becoming a significant threat to the environment.

Billions of items of polypropylene PPE can be converted into biofuels. Lead author Dr. Sapna Jain explains that converting this type of waste into pyrolysis oil (a type of synthetic fuel) "will not only prevent serious environmental consequences, but also create a new source of energy."

The main problem with PPE is their material - polypropylene. Its disposal is extremely difficult and requires chemical and physical methods. Once the masks end up in a landfill or in the ocean, they stay there for decades, as their natural degradation takes a very long time.

So scientists came to the conclusion that the best way to recycle is to recycle the material into something else. The researchers say that with the help of pyrolysis (a method of thermal decomposition of organic and inorganic compounds), polypropylene can be processed into fuel. This process is one of the most promising and sustainable waste recycling methods compared to incineration and landfilling.
