In a home workshop equipped with machines with electric motors, it may be necessary to connect and connect to the mains DC motors. There are several schemes for this.

The most widespread is the switching circuit using a starting rheostat that lowers the starting current, since when the engine is turned on, a starting current occurs that exceeds the nominal value by 10-20 times. The winding of the electric motor may simply not withstand, and this will lead to failure of both the motor itself and other circuit elements.

Connect the starting rheostat in series with the armature circuit (Fig. 100).

Rice. 100. Scheme for connecting a DC motor to the network: L - a clamp connected to the network; M - clamp connected to the excitation circuit; I am a clamp connected to an anchor; 1 - arc; 2 - lever; 3 - working contact.

Such a scheme is most suitable for engines with a power of more than 0,5 kW. The value of the starting resistance of the rheostat is calculated by the formula:

Electric motors. Inclusion of DC motors in a network of 110 or 220 volts

where Yap is the starting resistance of the rheostat (Ohm); U - mains voltage (110 or 220 V); 1nom - rated motor current (A); Yaya - armature winding resistance (Ohm).

The procedure for connecting a DC motor to the network is as follows:

- the lever on the rheostat is set to idle contact - 0;

- turn on the mains switch and move the rheostat lever to the first intermediate contact.

In this case, the engine will be excited, and the starting current will flow in the armature circuit, the value of which will depend on the large resistance that is formed from all four sections of the starting rheostat;

- with an increase in the armature speed, the starting current should decrease, which will reduce the starting resistance; to do this, move the rheostat lever to the second, then to the third contact, etc., until it is on the working contact (the rheostat lever cannot be kept on intermediate contacts for a long time, since starting rheostats are designed for a short operating time and delay them in this mode leads to overheating and failure).

There is also a procedure for disconnecting DC motors from the network, since they do not turn off immediately: first, the rheostat handle is moved to the extreme left position (of course, the engine will turn off, but the excitation winding will still remain closed to the resistance of the rheostat) and only then turn off the power to the engine. If you neglect this shutdown procedure and turn off the electric motor immediately, then at the moment of opening the circuit, such a large voltage may arise in it that the motor will fail.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Night milk is healing 04.07.2005

Finnish dairy farms are producing a new product: night milk.

It turns out that if you milk a cow at night or in the morning, but in a darkened room, the milk contains 10 times more melatonin, the sleep hormone, than in ordinary morning, afternoon or evening milk. Melatonin is also produced in the human body, but with age and under the influence of stress, its secretion is greatly reduced. Therefore, drinking a glass or two of nightly milk before bed is recommended for all older people and those who find it difficult to fall asleep.

The novelty is in great demand in Finland. Hundreds of farms have switched to night milking, especially since the new sort of milk is noticeably more expensive than usual. In addition, physiologists have found that night milking increases the fertility of cows.

But in Switzerland, where a farmer tried to take advantage of the Finnish experience, night milk was banned shortly after it appeared on store shelves. The reason is the strict Swiss laws on food, drugs and dietary supplements. A food product cannot be claimed as a remedy for disease or a means of preventing them, and even a mild form of insomnia is considered a disease by law.

High levels of melatonin should not be reported on milk bottles, as melatonin is a hormone, hence a drug. Perhaps later in Switzerland they will be allowed to sell night milk in pharmacies.
