ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RADIO ELECTRONICS AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING High frequency car speaker systems. Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering / Speakers Frontal acoustics wandered for me strongly and for a long time, until in the end there was such a combination of location, orientation, crossover frequency, phase and frequency equalization, in which the sound stage sat in the right place. Here it is time to think about the aesthetic aspects. The initial situation was as follows: Fokalov's tweeters are mounted on plastic facings of the front pillars, and holes are cut in the facings comparable in diameter to the bodies of the HF heads (without a front flange), and the heads themselves are fixed on flexible steel strips so that the orientation can be changed. After numerous, but, thanks to this design, not laborious trials, the required position was found. Now he had to be immortalized. There were plenty of live reproaches. Well, at least this example, installation on the prize-winning Ford Escort from the British finals. First of all, rings were cut off from a cardboard tube of a suitable diameter, which were put on the tweeters with a gap, and gradually adjusted so as to fit, if not along the entire perimeter, to the lining, and at the other end to become flush with the front plane of the tweeter. Where can I get a pipe? In my case, it served (once) as a container for sending geographical maps by mail. Another source, I suspect, with a large selection of diameters, can be trade enterprises that sell carpets, linoleum, film, etc. Is the concept clear? By the way, I have the same pipe and use it in phase inverter tunnels. One single map of the active tectonic structures of North Africa - and how much benefit to humanity! After fitting, the resulting pipes were seized (no more than that) by "Moment" to the facings, and the tweeters were removed and set aside - from sin. Now the nozzles fixed on the facings have become the carrier of invaluable information about the cherished orientation of the axes of the HF heads. The final fixing was achieved with fiberglass automotive putty (commercially available). Now the most fun - giving grace to forms. Once I tried the textile version, caraudio.ru/articles/impdoors, I fell in love with it for its technological elegance and in this case I didn’t even think much. The advantage of this technology over others based on mechanical processing is that geometrically consistent, smooth contours are obtained by themselves, and very quickly. In this work, I used two stubs of radio fabric (speaker cloth), left over from one of the previous projects. In general, you can use any stretchable fabric, the thicker - the stronger it will turn out. The fabric was fixed on the reverse side with contact glue (sold in auto audio stores and will be needed anyway when finishing). After making sure that the fabric is stretched and has taken the same shape on both blanks, we knead the resin and soak it. Resin for such work is better to take branded polyester (car accessories stores, for example AGA - there is one on 2nd Frunzenskaya, there is somewhere else). It is less viscous than the epoxy dear to the heart, and impregnates better, and if you don’t miss the proportion when adding a hardener, then it “gets up” faster, in an hour or so. It is necessary to impregnate everything, except for the middle of the future hole for the squeaker - it will be cut out later anyway, it will be easier on unimpregnated fabric. Once the resin had cured, the strength was sufficient for any reasonable handling - as a consequence of the relatively thick fabric. One talented resident of sunny Chukhon described his experience of using such technology, so he went and bought ladies' tights. In his case, then he had to apply more fiberglass - in tights like a power - there was only one appearance... Before the final finishing, I walked over the entire surface with an ordinary two-component putty, while basically it was necessary to smooth out the transition points from the fabric to the lining (shown by arrows) so that the resulting step was not very noticeable. If it was supposed to be painted later on the finished panels, it would have been a lot of work to remove the surface, but since I was oriented in advance to the vinyl finish, I could take the skin later and complete everything in a matter of minutes. Simultaneously with grinding the front surface, it is necessary to remove (cut / cut off) the edges of the fabric, bent to the reverse side, and cut out a section inside the nozzles. Vinyl, which is conjured on the pages of foreign sources, when crossing the border of the Russian Federation turns out to be just a leather substitute (we once had an ugly new language word vinyl polish. That's what it is.) Finishing with vinyl (I'll call it that - for solidity) is a short-lived business, but it requires a certain inspiration. From the materiel you need: contact glue, as already mentioned, and a heat gun, in extreme cases - a hair dryer. We apply glue, stretch the vinyl, where it is necessary to stretch it strongly - heat it with air, smooth it, smooth it, cut off the excess and get what is shown in the photo. After bending the edges of the vinyl inside the holes for the speakers, their diameter naturally decreases and it is very desirable not to miss here, because you cannot remove these bent petals - everything will immediately peel off the front surface. Measure the thickness of the vinyl with a caliper when selecting a blank for the pipes: the pipe should be two thicknesses wider. If everything is in order - we insert the tweeters, attach the wires back and put the facings in place. Please note, for show off, I painted the diffusers of the tweeters in a color called "Antique Blue", but this is not necessary. Let's look at the result:
