When experimenting, establishing various electronic homemade products, there is often a need for a DC source of relatively large capacity. Let's say a 4,5 V battery is made up of three "373" cells. To do this, they can be placed in a kind of container-cassette from a segment of the cycle chamber, fastened like a candy wrapper, wrapped in thick paper, or docked into a block using paper capsules - "shirts" from the same elements. But still, it is not always possible to provide a sufficiently reliable contact in such cases. That is why many still act "the old fashioned way" - they connect the elements to each other with pieces of wire using soldering.

However, almost everyone has a convenient, reliable ready-made element cassette. This is a flashlight. So use it, temporarily turning it into a laboratory power source.

Remove the nozzle with a reflector and unscrew the light bulb, and instead of it, make a counter part of the X1 connector for connecting an external load to the battery. To do this, take a burned-out light bulb, wrap it in several layers with a piece of cloth, gently crush the cone with pliers, and then solder the flexible stranded wires. Firmly insert (preferably with glue) a rubber plug cut out, for example, from an eraser, into the hole in the base. Screw the plug made in this way into the threaded socket for the light bulb, and the universal power supply with push-button (SB1) and sliding (SA1) switches is ready. It is useful when checking the electric motors of the undercarriage of models, when it is necessary to repeatedly start the drive mechanisms. For short-term inclusions, use the SB1 button.

Rice. 1. Power supply circuit

A flashlight converted in this way, in essence, will turn into the simplest control panel for slow-moving home-made toys and mock-ups driven by low-voltage DC microelectric motors. And in order for such a remote control with wires to have a more attractive and finished appearance, put on its front part a decorative nozzle made from a polyethylene bottle (from household chemicals or detergents) of a suitable diameter.

Flashlight powered
Rice. 2. Adapter from the lamp base: 1 - connecting wires, 2 - decorative nozzle, 3 - lamp body, 4 - lamp base, 5 - rubber plug.

It is convenient to use such a power source when setting up various electronic homemade products, including those described in our magazine.

What if you need a lower voltage, say 3V? It is enough to put an insert in place of the G2 element, made of a wooden block with tinplate plates nailed on both ends, cut from a can and interconnected by a wire jumper.

Flashlight powered
Rice. 3. Insert: 1 - a drop of solder with a height of 1,5-2 mm, 2 - a connecting jumper wire in insulation, 3 - a tin plate.

As you can see, it will not be difficult to make a power source without violating anything in the design of the flashlight. And if necessary, turn it back into a flashlight - a matter of seconds.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop with transparent display 03.03.2024

Lenovo introduced a laptop with a transparent 17,3-inch screen called ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop.

The screen, developed using MicroLED technology, has transparency of up to 55 percent. With a white background it becomes completely opaque, and with a black background it can be seen through it, which is possible from both sides. Maximum brightness reaches 1000 nits.

Lenovo engineers suggest that this design could be useful for digital artists, allowing them to see the world behind the screen while drawing on the bottom half of the laptop, where the touch keyboard is also located. By lifting the stylus, the user can free up space for creativity as the buttons automatically hide.

A PHI camera is installed on the back of the laptop base, which can recognize objects located behind the device. Lenovo is confident that this sensor will be useful when working with augmented reality technologies.

At the moment, the ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop is only a concept solution and not ready for release. In the current prototype, it is not possible to manually adjust the transparency of the entire screen, regardless of the color of the content. However, Lenovo is confident that such technologies will find application in production laptops in the next five years.
