A small hot spiral, powered by an electric current, in skillful hands turns into a kind of pencil, with which various images are burned on wood. This is an electric burner. For its manufacture you will need: a transformer that lowers the mains voltage from 220 V to 2-4 V, 1,5-2 m of stranded wire (electric cord), insulating tape, nichrome wire with a diameter of 0,5-0,8 mm, length 60-80 mm, a wooden blank with a diameter of 30 mm or a piece of textolite (plywood) 7-9 mm thick, M3 screws and nuts, small screws, strips of brass 1 mm thick, twine. We bring to the attention of readers two options for an electric burner, each of which is distinguished by simplicity, reliability and safety in operation.

The first design (Fig. 1). From a wooden throw 30x30 mm, turn a handle on a lathe or use it ready from any tool. On the central axis of the handle, drill a hole with a diameter of 7-10 mm for the power cord.

Homemade electric burner
Rice. 1. Homemade electric burner with a turned handle: 1- nichrome wire, 2 - bolt with M3 nut, 3- contact plate. 4 - self-tapping screw, 5 - handle, 6 - electric cord, 7 - step-down transformer.

Cut out two holder plates from sheet brass, drill two holes in them with a diameter of 3 mm and bend them at a right angle. Having given them the shape shown in the drawing, attach them with small screws to the end of the handle and bring the bare ends of the power cord under the heads, passing it through the hole. On the opposite side of the holders, install clamps for nichrome wire - two M3 screws with washers and nuts. Bend the ends of the heater into rings with a diameter of about 3 mm and clamp between the plates and washers.

The second design (Fig. 2). Make the handle from textolite or plywood 7-9 mm thick, drill four holes with a diameter of 3 mm and fix the brass holder plates. Connect the power cord to the extreme pair of screws of the holders, lay it along the handle, wrap it in several layers with insulating tape, and then over it with twine.

Homemade electric burner
Rice. 2. Variant of an electric burner with a flat handle: 1 - nichrome wire; 2 - contact plate; 3 - bolt with nut M3; 4 - insulating winding; 5 - insulating tape; 6- handle; 7- electric cord.

The electric burner is connected to the step-down winding of the transformer (first to 2 V). The bow of the pointed bend of the nichrome wire should glow to a dark red color. If its confluence is bright red, the heater will quickly burn out. To prevent this from happening, change the length of the heating element from 60 to 80 mm and the magnitude of the applied voltage.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Solar tornadoes will help green energy 12.07.2012

An international team of scientists believe that giant rotating magnetic structures on the Sun may be responsible for the temperature difference between the surface and the core of the star. Such structures can also be used on Earth - in thermonuclear reactors (tokamaks).

Solar tornadoes are thousands of times larger and more powerful than their Earth counterparts, reaching a width of 1600 km. Solar tornadoes have a magnetic "skeleton" that spins at over 9600 km/h at temperatures of millions of degrees Celsius. It is believed that about 11 thousand such vortices usually exist simultaneously above the surface of the Sun.

Scientists from the University of Sheffield, the University of Oslo, the Freiburg Institute for Solar Physics and the University of Uppsala believe that it is solar tornadoes that, using electromagnetic waves, carry energy from under the surface of the Sun to its atmosphere. “If we understand how nature heats up magnetized plasma and forms plasma vortices, one day we will be able to use this process to create new environmentally friendly energy sources,” says Professor Robertus Erdeli. problems of modern astrophysics".

The problem the scientist is talking about is that the Sun's atmosphere is significantly hotter than its surface. It is clear that the energy goes from bottom to top to the surface of the star, but the way this energy is transferred remains a mystery.

Scientists have studied tornadoes in the Sun's outer atmosphere using space and ground-based telescopes. They then created the most detailed XNUMXD tornado model to date. Scientists have discovered a possible mechanism for the transfer of a huge amount of energy. Most likely, rotating magnetic structures create a kind of channel that allows energy to be transported in the form of electromagnetic waves. It is this energy that heats the solar plasma. If this process can be reproduced on Earth, it can be used to activate and stabilize plasma in a tokamak, which is a difficult task today.
