If there is no zener diode for the required voltage at hand, a simple two-transistor device will replace it.

Transistor analogue of a zener diode Transistor analogue of a zener diode

By rotating the engine of the variable resistor R2, the transistor VT1 is opened to a greater or lesser extent. followed by VT2. By changing the internal resistance of the transistor VT2 in this way, the required voltage value is set on it using R2.

The BC547 transistor can be replaced by any low-power silicon transistor, for example, the KT315, KT312 series, with h21e>100. and BC557 - with a medium power transistor, for example, KT814 or KT816.

In one of the magazines "Modeler-Constructor" a few years ago, a diagram of an analogue of a zener diode was published. When I needed to stabilize the "non-standard" voltage, I remembered this circuit, found its drawing in my notebook and assembled it. It turned out that she regularly performs her functions. It can be used instead of any zener diode within 3 ... 25 V.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Anti-plagiarism for teachers Turnitin 09.04.2023

Turnitin, which is used by more than 2 million educators to find plagiarism in students' work, now has a tool to detect AI in an update amid the popularity of ChatGPT and other AI platforms.

"Educators say that discovering AI in student work is a top priority. It's just as important that this technology be part of their workflow, which is why we've integrated this capability into Turnitin," said Turnitin CEO Chris Karen.

Turnitin will be able to detect the use of ChatGPT and other AI platforms "with 98 percent accuracy," and the company's GPT-3 detection technology has been in production for more than two years.

Turnitin's AI Detector provides an estimated measurement of how many sentences in written material can be generated by AI. Educators can use it to determine if further review, query, or discussion with a student is needed.

The launch of ChatGPT caused a great uproar among teachers in schools and universities, with some enthusiastically embracing the technology, while others expressed concern about the difficulty of detecting fraud in student papers. For example, the chatbot was banned from use in New York schools, because teachers did not distinguish between artificial intelligence texts and works written by students.

Separately, Turnitin is launching a website for educators that provides tips for educators on academic integrity policies in the AI era and updates on the progress of AI tools.
