In the production of fluorescent lamps, instead of flasks, glass tubes are used, coated from the inside with a phosphor. At both ends of the tube there are tungsten spirals soldered into the tube. The spirals are coated with a special oxide paste, which allows the electrons to leave the spirals. Inside the glass tube is filled with mercury vapor and argon. The length and diameter of the tube depends on the voltage and power of the lamp.

In addition, the lamp has a starter, which is an ionic relay, made in the form of two electrodes, sealed in a bulb filled with neon. One of the starter electrodes is a bimetallic plate.

After the lamp is connected to the network, a discharge occurs between the starter electrodes, which heats the bimetallic plate. When heated, it bends and closes the second contact.

The current passing through the circuit heats the electrodes of the lamp to a temperature of 800-1000 ° C. At this moment, the bimetallic plate cools down, straightens, and the circuit opens.

In order for a large self-induction EMF to occur between the electrodes at the moment of opening the circuit, creating an electric discharge in argon and mercury vapor, a choke is used.

But for all its usefulness, the choke lowers the efficiency of the lamp. In order to avoid this, a capacitor with a capacity of 4 to 8 microfarads is used. At the same time, the efficiency increases to 95%.

To cancel interference in radio equipment that occurs in connection with the operation of a fluorescent lamp, a 0,06 μF capacitor is included in the electrical circuit (in parallel with the starter). Fluorescent lamps are designed for voltage 220 V with a power of 30, 40, 80 and 125 watts.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Over 300 types of ice identified 13.12.2017

Takahiro Matsui and his colleagues at Okayama University, Japan, calculated that there could be - in addition to the already modeled zeolite ice - an even less dense phase, which they called "air ice" (aeroice).

More than 300 kinds of porous molecular structures of ice, obtained from zeolite frameworks and cosmic fullerenes, are studied using classical molecular dynamics modeling. The hypothetical zeolite ice phase is found to be less dense and more stable than the rarefied ice structures reported previously.

Moreover, in connection with the zeolite structure of ice, even less dense structures, "air ice", are proposed. According to calculations, this is the most stable solid phase of water near zero absolute temperature at negative pressure.

The ice on the surface of planet Earth that we are so familiar with is a hexagonal crystal structure. High in the atmosphere you can find cubic ice. In addition to them, in nature there are no other structures that give water in the solid state. And since the conditions for the existence of low density ice - the aforementioned zeolite ice - are extremely low pressure and temperature, it is more likely to be found on another planet.
