It is known how difficult it is for a car driver to struggle with sleep during long trips at night and early morning. But the slightest weakening of the driver's attention can turn into a disaster!

The figure shows a schematic diagram of a device that automatically turns on the car's horn at the moment when the driver began to fall asleep and relaxed his fingers squeezing the steering wheel. The power of the sound signal is quite enough to "shake" the driver and make him hold the steering wheel tighter, or, if this does not help, to attract the attention of drivers of other vehicles.

This device is easy. The "heart" of the device is a self-oscillator, made according to the "capacitive three-point" scheme on the transistor T1. The base of the transistor T1 through the capacitor C3 is connected to the metal rim A, reinforced around the perimeter of the steering wheel. When the driver tightly grips the steering wheel, due to the large capacitance of the driver's body relative to the mass of the car, the base of the transistor T1 is shunted by the capacitor C3, as a result of which generation does not occur.

To keep the driver awake at the wheel
If the driver relaxes his fingers, the shunt capacitance will decrease and the generator will be excited at a frequency of about 300 kHz. The voltage of this frequency from the collector of the transistor T1 is fed through the emitter follower on the transistor T2 to the input of the detector, made on the diodes D1 and D2. The voltage rectified by the diodes opens the transistors T3 and T4 of the electronic relay, as a result of which relay P1 is activated, closing the sound signal circuit with its contacts.

Adjustment of the device is reduced to setting the required sensitivity of the oscillator. This is done using the potentiometer R4. In addition, the potentiometer R5 regulates the operating current of the electronic relay.

The device is powered from the on-board network with a voltage of +12 V. Coil L1 is wound on a ferrite rod, its inductance is 1 ins.

Transistors T1-T3 can be of the KT315 type with any letter index, T4 - KT361. Diodes D1 and D2 - D9V-D9E, D3 - KS156A, D4 - D226B. Turnip R1 - with a coil resistance of at least 120 ohms.

Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in collaboration with colleagues from Chile, have developed a device that collects drinking water from the air. This is not a unique human invention: in some of the planet's driest regions, plants and animals have uniquely adapted to water scarcity. In places where precipitation is extremely rare or even non-existent, animals and plants draw water directly from the air, and more specifically the fog that drifts from the oceans.

Scientists were able to repeat this "trick", only on a much larger scale, and created an installation that is capable of extracting up to 10% of moisture from the fog. Similar installations are already operating in 17 countries around the world, but their efficiency rarely reaches even 2%.

Conventional systems for collecting water from air consist of a vertical network made of polyolefin fibers. These networks are cheap, but inefficient, since even under optimal conditions they can extract only 2% of the moisture from the fog.

Specialists from MIT were able to choose the ideal network parameters and dramatically increase its efficiency. First of all, it is necessary to replace synthetic fibers with a stainless steel net with threads 2-3 times the thickness of a human hair. In addition, a special coating must be applied to the net, which allows droplets to slide more easily through the net and enter the water collection chute before the wind blows them away and carries them away with the rest of the fog. At the same time, it is important that the mesh size of the network is 2 times larger than the diameter of the fibers from which this network is made.

A prototype of the new device has been tested in coastal mountains on the edge of the Atacama Desert. With a network area of ​​1 sq. m. managed to get several liters of drinking water per day. Moreover, as calculations have shown, at certain times of the year such a device can collect up to 12 liters of fresh water per day. If you use a network placed in several rows one after another, then you can collect much more moisture than the calculated 10%.
