A solar module is a battery of interconnected solar cells enclosed under a glass cover. The more intense the light falling on the photocells and the larger their area, the more electricity is generated and the greater the current strength. Modules are classified by peak power in watts (Wp). Watt is a unit of measure for power. One peak watt is a technical characteristic that indicates the value of the power of the installation under certain conditions, i.e. when solar radiation of 1 kW/m2 falls on the element at a temperature of 25°C.

solar modules

This intensity is achieved under good weather conditions and the Sun at its zenith. One 10 x 10 cm cell is needed to produce one peak watt. Larger modules, 1 m x 40 cm, produce about 40-50 Wh. However, solar illumination rarely reaches 1 kW/m2. Moreover, in the sun the module heats up much higher than the nominal temperature. Both of these factors reduce the performance of the module.

Under typical conditions, the average performance is about 6 Wh per day and 2000 Wh per year per 1 Wh. 5 Wh is the amount of energy consumed by a 50 W light bulb for 6 minutes (50 W x 0,1 h = 5 W h) or a portable radio for an hour (5 W x 1 h = 5 W h) .

solar modules

Although product quality is not always the same, most international companies produce fairly reliable photovoltaic modules with a service life of up to 20 years. To date, module manufacturers guarantee the specified power for a period of up to 10 years.

The decisive criterion for comparing different types of modules is the price of 1 watt of peak power. In other words, you can get more power for the same money using a $569 module with 120 Wp peak power ($4,74 per 1 Wp) than with a "cheap" 90 Wp module that costs $489 (5,43. $1 for XNUMX Wp). Rated efficiency is less important when choosing a system.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Biodegradable printed circuit boards for electronics 29.07.2023

German chipmaker Infineon Technologies has announced the development of fully biodegradable printed circuit boards made from organic fibers. This approach significantly reduces the environmental footprint compared to traditional microelectronics, and also facilitates the collection and recycling of electronic components after use.

The creation of organic printed circuit boards is the result of a collaboration with British startup Jiva Materials. Their manufacturing process includes the use of natural fibers and halogen-free polymers. The organic structure of the boards is embedded in non-toxic polymers that dissolve on contact with hot water. This process results in the formation of composted organic materials while freeing up the electronic components welded to the boards. This approach greatly simplifies the collection and recycling of used parts.

The transition to organic printed circuit boards not only helps to reduce the environmental impact, but also to increase the recovery of valuable metals from failed devices. According to the developers, this technology will reduce carbon emissions by 60%: for every square meter of the board, the carbon footprint will be reduced by 10,5 kg.

Infineon Technologies has already successfully tested the new technology in the production of test chips for telecommunications devices. Stress tests have shown that these PCBs perform well in the real world.

For the first time, biodegradable PCB materials are being introduced into the development of consumer and industrial electronics, a significant step forward towards a more sustainable future.
