An unusual Searaser device and a project called Dartmouth Wave Energy (English inventor Alvin Smith) resembles a wave power plant that uses the energy of the vertical movement of the float. However, the float itself does not have electrical systems and is a mechanical pump that pumps sea water to a great height into the coastal cliffs. This project is an unusual mini-pumped storage power plant (Pumped-storage hydroelectricity).

The installation is based on 2 floats capable of moving relative to each other. The upper one is swayed by waves, the lower one is connected to the bottom with a chain and an anchor. Between the floats is a "pumping station" (a cylinder with a double-acting piston that pumps water as it moves up and down) and valves with outlet pipes. Automatic adjustment of the height of the upper float depending on the sea level, which changes at high and low tide - a telescopic tube that expands and folds under the action of Archimedes forces and gravity. A pump with a top float is attached to this "tidal" column. Water is supplied to the land, to the mountains. A pool is built in the mountains, in which water accumulates and is released back into the sea, spinning the turbine of a power plant along the way, identical to a traditional hydroelectric power plant, but without a dam.

The advantages of such an installation are as follows. The float has no wires, magnets, coils, contacts, or sealed equipment compartments, making it much cheaper, simpler, and more reliable. The turbines and electric generators of the wave station, located on the shore, are a technique that has long been tried and tested at hydroelectric power stations. Unlike a traditional pumped storage plant, the Searaser does not require a downstream reservoir. Unlike wave power plants, this installation solves the problem of wave strength unevenness.

According to the creator of the machine, Searaser can raise sea water to a height of 200 m. One full-size Searaser float develops a power of 0,25 MW.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Why e-commerce won't replace brick-and-mortar 17.04.2011

A series of curious experiments were carried out at the California Institute of Technology (USA). A group of 50 hungry students were asked to give a monetary value to a pack of cookies, a bag of chips, candy bars, and other small treats. Moreover, in order for the student to assign his own price to each product, he was presented with these products either in kind, or in the form of images on a computer monitor, or in the form of a list that also appeared on the screen.

It turned out that the participants in the experiment were willing to pay the same price for the name or image of the product, but when they saw the real product, the price increased by 50 percent. It is important that this was a real trade: a hungry student was given a product for a price assigned to them.

Deciding to test the results on non-food items, the students were offered to buy little things with the emblem of their university: a key chain, a ballpoint pen, a baseball cap. And in this case, if the buyers saw the real item, they bid half the price for it than when they saw only its image or line in the list.

Finally, they repeated the experiment with food products, but offered them under a glass jar, so that they could not be touched or smelled. Here the difference in the offered price between the real product, its image and the name in the list disappeared.

Conclusion: Online stores will never replace the real ones, where you can see the product, turn it in your hands and smell it.
