At home, when everything is at hand, everyday problems are solved easier, which cannot be said about the bivouac life of a person on a hike - be it a tourist, a geologist, a surveyor. Here, preliminary preparation often helps out, or resourcefulness on the spot, ingenuity, so necessary in the so-called field conditions.

When going on a hiking trip, you have to subject to strict selection all the things prepared for this - after all, as the popular song among "hikers" says: "because there is not enough space in the backpack."

This is especially true for large items, such as bucket. However, for seasoned tourists, the bucket may turn out to be ... flat, and at the right time - again voluminous, in which at a halt it will be possible to bring even more water than usual.

Folding canvas bucket: 1 - body; 2 - spacer ring; 3 bail buckets

Making a body pattern by applying to a metal bucket: 1 - tarpaulin flap; 2 - bucket-template; 3 - hairpins (pins)

The fact is that it is not metal, but specially made for hiking - from a thin tarpaulin (or from a similar waterproof fabric). It is known that the tarpaulin, after getting wet, practically does not let water through, which makes it possible to deliver it in such a bucket even from a source not located nearby.

Preparation of initial parts

To make such a bucket is not difficult and accessible to almost every "hiker". It is cut out of two flaps: separately for the hull and bottom. Their dimensions are selected depending on the desired capacity, that is, the final volume of the manufactured bucket.

The easiest way to cut out the body is to place the fabric over a suitable metal bucket and secure it with pins, with a slight allowance for the seams. The bottom can also be marked in place by placing a flap under the bottom of a metal bucket and also leaving a narrow strip of seam allowance along the contour.

The sequence of the seam: 1 - a simple line; 2 - bending the seam allowance; 3 - laying a two-layer seam; 4 - firmware "shirt" seam

The next blanks will be a spacer (upper) metal ring and a bow to it. Both parts are made of wire of suitable stiffness. At the same time, on opposite sides of the ring, "ears" are made under the bow, and at the ends of the latter, reciprocal hooks are bent under them.

Manufacturing and assembly

The sewing of the canvas bucket can be done in two ways. The first one is for those who have experience working on a sewing machine: it will not be difficult for them to first stitch the body pattern separately, and then attach the bottom to the resulting cylinder. However, it is not scary to take on this and those who do not have such experience, since you can do without a typewriter, using just a large ("gypsy") needle with a strong ("harsh") thread and a slightly different sequence of connecting blanks. Its essence is that to simplify the work, you can begin to sew the bottom of the body workpiece with the bottom gradually, "in a circle", and then make a vertical seam of the bucket body. This sequence is suitable for both hand and machine sewing.

Having completed a simple seam, it is converted into a so-called "shirt", double, which in this case provides a more reliable seal. To do this, the seam allowance is folded over to obtain a double layer and stitched again.

Having completed the manufacture of the bucket body, proceed to assemble it with metal parts. A spacer ring is preliminarily made by measuring its length along the perimeter of the body neck and twisting the ends of the wire (or "hiding" them in a small sleeve of a suitable diameter, crimping it to secure the inserted ends).

On the ring from diametrically opposite sides, bends-ears are prepared for the shackle. The latter is made of the same (or thicker) wire, with annular bends at the ends, which are connected to the ears of the spacer ring.

The spacer ring is now to be connected to the finished housing. To do this, the upper edge of the latter is bent onto the spacer ring and stitched with a two-track seam. The finished bucket is ready to be folded into a hiking-friendly flat pack.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Moth eyes help radiology 18.07.2012

The eyes of the moth inspired scientists from City University (New York) to develop a nanomaterial that reduces harmful radiation and at the same time increases the resolution of x-rays.

The eyes of the moth, seen by probably everyone who has at least some kind of clothing, are made up of thousands of ommatidia - structures consisting of a primitive cornea and lens. At the same time, the moth's eyes reflect very little light, which helps insects hide from predators. By studying the "anti-reflective" eyes of moths, scientists have developed a new class of materials that increase the efficiency of X-ray machines and similar medical devices.

The researchers focused on scintillation materials, which, when exposed to X-ray photons, absorb energy and re-emit it as light. This is how x-rays are made. Scientists have created a 500-nm cerium film doped with lutetium oxyorthosilicate. An array of pyramidal protrusions made of silicon nitride is formed on the film. Like the bumps on the cornea of a moth's eye, the protrusions on the artificial film capture the maximum amount of light. On a film sized 100x100 microns, 10-20 thousand protrusions are placed.

In laboratory experiments, adding a thin film to the scintillator of a conventional mammography x-ray machine increased the intensity of the emitted light by as much as 175%. This means that with an equal dose of radiation, it is possible to significantly increase the resolution of the image or, with image quality comparable to traditional X-ray machines, to reduce the radiation dose. According to the developers, it will take 3-5 years to test and prepare a new X-ray examination technology for clinical use.
