Нож - an extremely useful item in any journey and in an extreme situation, so its choice must be given the closest attention.

The design of the knives has undergone changes in two directions. On the one hand, more and more specialized knives appeared, on the other hand, more and more universal ones. As a result, knives appeared, which, for example, are convenient only for cutting paper or butchering carcasses, or having a huge number of different items that are equally inconvenient to use.

Jackknife

A versatile folding knife is always needed, regardless of whether you take another knife or ax with you.

A versatile folding knife with many blades and objects is inconvenient and almost useless. In fact, most often you only need a large blade, a can opener, a long awl, a flathead screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver. A folding knife should be fairly easy to open and close well. The large blade must have a latch that prevents it from closing during operation.

In terms of set of items and convenience, Swiss knives are not bad, but many of them have a large blade that is not optimally shaped and not thick enough. Often these knives are made in China or Turkey, using low-quality steel.

Russian knives are made of good steel, the blade is optimally shaped, but the set of objects, handle and weight leave much to be desired. Therefore, choosing a good knife is quite difficult.

Hunter knives

Specialized tourist knives are not produced. They are all considered either hunting or fighting. At the same time, the shape of hunting knives is dictated primarily by the need to butcher large carcasses of wild animals, and combat knives are designed to inflict severe stab wounds on people. Neither the one nor the other traveler or tourist hopefully need. The main use of a camping knife is parking lot chores and food preparation, so it should look like a small but sturdy kitchen knife. Maybe it's not so cool and there is nothing to brag to others, but it's practical.

Based on this, you should choose a knife. The knife should have a blade length of 12-13 cm, a width of 28-30 mm, and a blade thickness of no more than 3.5 mm. The blade should be the same in width and have a smooth transition to the tip in the area of 4-5 cm, sharpening on one side. The hardness of the blade should be 50-56 units on the Rockwell scale. The handle should not be wider than the blade, in cross section it should be oval, the presence of guards, crosses, stops is not allowed, at the end from the sharpening side, a protrusion directed towards the hand is allowed. The length of the handle is about 12 cm, the material is preferably wood, birch bark, leather.

Usually, thick leather sheaths appear on sale, in which the knife is held by the blade. If the handle is too heavy, then such a knife tends to roll over. Carrying a knife on a belt vertically is not always convenient. The sheath hanging vertically on the belt has to be constantly adjusted if you sit down. It is convenient to carry a knife on the thigh, but it causes inconvenience when walking. The scabbard will have to be made by yourself. The most comfortable sheaths are those in which the knife is fixed by the handle.

The knife should always be sharpened and ready for use. The quality of sharpening is checked as follows. Holding a sheet of newspaper by one edge, try to cut the paper with sharp short movements. If this worked out, then consider that your knife is sharpened in the best possible way. If the cutting edge clings to the paper in some area, leaving torn edges on it, further sharpening is necessary. Areas of an unfinished edge are easily identified by the villi of paper remaining on it.

Keep your knife clean by coating the blade with a thin layer of lubricant. When not in use, the knife must be sheathed.
