Consider some units of length.

Meter (French metre, from Greek metron - measure) is the basic SI unit of length.

A measure of length that reproduces the unit of length - a meter.

Initially (France, 1791) the meter was defined as 1 10-7 parts of the earth's meridian.

Until 1960, the international prototype of the meter was a bar made of Pt-Ir alloy with strokes applied on one of its planes (stored at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sevres near Paris).

From 1960 to 1983, the meter was defined as the length equal to 1650763,73 of the wavelength in the radiation vacuum corresponding to the transition between the levels 2p10 and 5d5 of the 86Kr atom.

According to the definition adopted by the 17th General Conference on Weights and Measures (1983), the Meter is the length of the path traveled by light in a vacuum in 1/299792458 of a second.

Mile (English mile), a unit of length that is widespread in national non-metric systems of units and is now used mainly in maritime affairs. A nautical mile is equal to the length of one minute of an average degree of latitude, a chir is 1852,2 m (10 cable lengths). 1M (nautical) = 1.852 km, in the UK 1M (sea) = 1.853 km, 1M, land (statutory) = 1.609 km (also used in the USA), Geographic mile is equal to 4 minutes of latitude or 7412,6 m, old Russian mile 1M = 7.468 km., in Romania 7,85 km, postal in Poland 8,35 km and 7,59 km in the Czech Republic.

Roman mile. The soldiers of Ancient Rome, walking along the roads of the empire, measured the distance with double steps. The word "mile" itself comes from the Latin mille passus (a thousand steps), which was a measure of distance in Rome. The original Roman mile was 1475 m - this is the distance the legions covered on average after a thousand double steps, the length of which was about one and a half meters. This is somewhat less than the double step of today's adult man.

Metric

1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm)

1 kilometer (km) = 1000 m

1 km - 0,621 statute miles = 0,540 nautical miles

English

1 foot = 12 in.

1 yard = 3 feet = 36 inches

1 land mile = 1760 yards = 5280 feet

1 land mile = 1,609 km = 0,869 nautical mile

sea

1 fathom (fathom) = 6 feet

1 cables = 608 feet

1 NAVAL MILE = 10 CABLE = 6080 feet

1 nautical mile = 1,151 land mile = 1,852 km

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The oldest black hole in the universe has been found 10.12.2017

American astronomers from the Carnegie Institution announced the discovery of a new galaxy, in the center of which is a supermassive black hole. Scientists suggest that the galaxy formed 690 million years after the Big Bang.

The galaxy and black hole formed during the era of reionization - it is believed that at this time the universe was covered with clouds of neutral hydrogen, which blocked most of the starlight. Over time, quasars, considered one of the strongest sources of energy in space, ionized the hydrogen, causing the universe to become "brighter".

The new galaxy was named J1342 + 0928. During its study, it turned out that the galaxy is especially rich in metals. Astronomers have noted that this is typical of the very first stars, which consisted almost entirely of hydrogen and helium.

Also, in the accumulation of interstellar dust, astronomers found a large amount of carbon, and in the very center of the galaxy, where the black hole is located, nitrogen, magnesium and even silicon.

Such observations can say one thing: this is a new, previously unknown type of star formation, shared Eduarda Bansados, lead author of the study.

Scientists speculate that the early universe contributed to the formation of massive, unstable stars that exploded after a few million years, producing metals faster than the universe in its current state. New stars were already formed from the "remains" of the former ones, thereby accumulating heavy elements in themselves, the authors of the study concluded.
