The table shows data for visibility orientation certain objects.

night visibility

Light source Visibility
When viewed from the air
Beacons bright and high to 75 km
Vertical spotlight beams 60 km
Lighthouses of small luminosity and low height 20 km
Headlights of a car, tractor 10 km
For ground observation
Vertical spotlight beams to 50 km
Bonfires 8 km
Lightning on the clouds 5 km
Flashing fire or reflections of gun shots 1.5 km
Pocket electric torch 1.5 km
lit cigarette 0.5 km

The speed of light in air is approximately equal to the speed of light in vacuum and is 300 km per second, so it is not difficult to calculate the distance to the object of observation by measuring the time it takes light to travel in the forward and backward directions. Unfortunately, the description of the methodology and technique of such measurements takes up too much space and does not fit into the megabytes allocated for the site.

Because the speed of light is 1000 times the speed of sound, it is usually believed that light propagates instantly, therefore, when you see lightning, count the seconds until the first roll of thunder. From the table, you can approximately determine the distance to the place where the discharge disappeared.

Time Distance in km.
After 1 sec. 1/3
2 seconds 2/3
3 seconds 1.0
4 sec 1.1/3

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Mystery of natural mushroom factory solved 01.05.2012

Researchers at the University of Bristol have unraveled the mystery of a mushroom 'natural factory' that could help develop new drugs.

In 1942, scientists first isolated an aromatic compound known as stypitic acid from mushrooms. By 1945, the structure of this substance had been studied, but it turned out to be so unique that it revolutionized organic chemistry.

Stipitatic acid is very unusual. It shows properties similar to the aromatic six-membered rings of benzene, but is a seven-membered carbon rings known as tropolones. Until now, it was a mystery how fungi synthesize such a substance using biological processes, because chemists managed to produce tropolone rings only with the help of complex chemical reactions in the presence of nickel and platinum.

Using a combination of genetic and chemical methods, scientists have for the first time identified the genes responsible for the production of tropolones in mushrooms. The researchers blocked the synthesis process at various stages and thus restored the pattern of synthesis at the molecular level.

Stipitatic acid is the basis of a number of fungal compounds that can be used to make antidepressants, antimalarials, and antibacterials. The discovery of the biosynthetic process for tropolone could lead to the creation of cheap and efficient methods for the production of new drugs.

Currently, scientists plan to use genetic engineering to create mushrooms capable of producing new medicinal compounds.
