In almost any school textbook, where they describe ways of orientation and determination of cardinal points, there is a statement that you can find the north-south direction by tree crowns or annual rings on cut stumps. This is a dangerous delusion, but according to some natural phenomena, you can still roughly orient yourself in the cardinal points.

Near large stones, stumps, buildings, snow thaws faster on the south side, which is more strongly illuminated by the sun. And vice versa, in recesses, ravines, hollows, pits, etc. it thaws faster on the north side, because the southern edges of the depressions do not receive direct sunlight. The same thawing can be observed even in the footprints of humans and animals left in the snow.

On the southern slopes of the mountains, thawed patches form faster than on the northern ones, the snow mass is as if ruffled, forms a kind of bristle, separated by thawed patches, or spikes elongated to the south. The steeper the slopes, the faster the formation of thawed patches.

At the northern edge of the forest, the soil is released from under the snow 10-15 days later than at the southern one. In March - April, holes elongated to the south are formed around the trunks of free-standing trees, stumps and pillars in the snow.

It is known that the resin protrudes more on the southern half of the trunk of a coniferous tree. The bark of birch and pine on the north side is darker than on the south, and tree trunks, stones, rock ledges are densely covered with moss and lichens.

Some animals, eg. squirrels build their dwelling, taking into account the prevailing wind direction. Ants make their homes almost all south of the nearest trees, stumps and bushes. The southern side of the anthill is flatter than the northern one. Steppe bees build their dwellings on the south side.

The Syrian nuthatch makes its nest on a rock wall that always faces east. Three-toed gulls or Maevkas nest on the rocks in numerous flocks, and their nests are always located on the western and northwestern shores of the islands, because. facing south, southeast. Flocks of migratory birds fly mainly in a northerly direction in spring, and south in autumn.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Floating microrobot delivers medicines 16.08.2012

A team of researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology used sophisticated computational models to develop a floating microrobot capable of delivering drugs and other payloads, controlled by external impulses such as light.

When the "sub" is only a few microns long, swimming becomes a very difficult task. Even such a fluid liquid as water turns into viscous honey for the object. Naturally, the microrobot's tiny propellers are usually not enough to swim in such an environment. That is why the researchers decided to start by developing a virtual model of an ideal floating microrobot. According to scientists, such microrobots in the future will be able to transport goods inside microfluidic chips and even inside the human body. In addition, groups of microrobots will be able to build tiny structures and mechanisms, moving at a speed of several micrometers per second.

The microrobot developed by scientists is made of a special gel that changes shape during chemical reactions, temperature changes, under the influence of an oscillating magnetic or electric field. The robot, about 10 microns long, looks like a hollow tube with two valves at the ends. Under the influence of stimulating impulses, the gel will change in volume and set in motion the fins located on the sides of the body. A valve in the front of the hull will serve as a steering control. It is controlled by light, magnetic or electric field.

The key to creating the first prototype of such a robot should be progress in the field of hydrogel materials that can change their volume. Great progress has already been made in this direction, and it is hoped that floating microrobots will soon become a super-efficient medical and industrial tool.
