Most earthquake victims

In July 1201, 1,1 million people, mostly Egyptians and Syrians, died in an earthquake in the Eastern Mediterranean.

An earthquake on February 2, 1556 in the Chinese provinces of Shanxi, Shaanxi and Henan is believed to have caused the death of 830000 people.

Today, the earthquake that claimed the maximum number of lives occurred in the Chinese city of Tangshan on July 28, 1976. The first official report spoke of 655237 dead, then 750000, and later this figure was adjusted to 242000 people.

The most significant property damage caused by an earthquake

The September 1, 1923, earthquake on the Kanto Plateau, Japan, destroyed 575700 buildings in Tokyo and Yokohama. According to official figures, 142807 people died or went missing as a result of the earthquake and the fires it caused.

The largest number of deaths in a volcanic eruption

During the eruption of the Tambora volcano on the island of Sumbawa, Indonesia (then a colony of the Netherlands), April 5-10, 1815, 92000 people died, some directly during the eruption, and others as a result of the subsequent famine.

Victims of a landslide

On May 31, 1970, about 18000 people died in a landslide on the slopes of Huascaran near the city of Yungay, Peru, which became the most devastating landslide in history. Huascaran is the highest peak in Peru (6768 m), covered with a snow cap in the Andes, and is popular among climbers and tourists. Its slopes have already twice become the scene of major misfortunes. In 1962, a sudden thaw caused part of the steep northern peak to break off, causing an avalanche that destroyed several villages and caused the death of 3500 people. In 1970, a landslide caused by an earthquake wiped out 10 villages and most of the city of Yungai. It was one of the worst natural disasters in the twentieth century in terms of the number of deaths.

Largest death toll from landslides

On December 16, 1929, a series of landslides caused by an earthquake that shook Gansu Province, China, killed 180000 people.

The greatest material damage caused by landslides

In southern California, USA, a series of mudflows triggered from January 18 to 26, 1969 by almost 9 days of heavy rainfall by a subtropical hurricane caused $138 million in damage.

Most deaths from lightning strike

On December 8, 1963, a Boeing 707 jet was struck by lightning near Elkton, Maryland, USA and crashed. 81 passengers died.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>
