PERSONAL TRANSPORT: GROUND, WATER, AIR
Wave energy converter. Personal transport Directory / Personal transport: land, water, air Many devices have been proposed where the energy of sea waves is used to generate electricity, pump water, move ships ... However, while they are complex, they are expensive. The reason, apparently, is that technology is only beginning to show interest in these issues. But there is no evil without good. In such a "young" area, even a beginner has a chance to join a serious business. And not in words, but in work. Many modern devices that use the energy of sea waves originate from the installation proposed by K. E. Tsiolkovsky. Here is the principle of its action. Look at Figure 1. An inverted barrel is floating in the water, secured with a rope. It sways on the waves, the water level in its cavity is constantly changing. It looks like a water piston. It is enough to install inlet and outlet valves in its bottom, fix the hose, and now the barrel has turned into an air pump. The energy of the waves is converted into the energy of compressed air, which can be sent through a hose to the place we need.
It is not difficult to make such a device, and it can work for many years until it wears out. It can also be used, for example, for aerating fish ponds or by directing air into a turbine connected to a generator to generate electricity. Marine signal buoys produced in our country and abroad operate on this principle. Unfortunately, the efficiency of small-sized air turbines is low, and manufacturing is rather difficult. Therefore, it is quite possible that you will prefer the engine designed by A. S. Abramov. Its power is of the order of several watts. It is easy to manufacture and has a fairly high efficiency. Figure 2 shows its demo model. Six plastic cups are attached to the disc. It is important that all of them are located one after another and the bottom of each subsequent one "looks" into the cavity of the previous one. A gap of 20...30 mm is left between the cups.
The bed and its base are soldered from tin. A branch pipe (4 mm in diameter) is fixed on the base, connected by a hose to a pear from a spray gun. When pumping air with a pear, the bubbles emerging from the nozzle fall into the nearest cup. As a result, it turns into a diving bell, from which air gradually displaces water. The glass floats under the action of the Archimedes force and turns the wheel. During testing of the demo model, the rotation speed reached 60 rpm. For the operation of such an engine, it is enough to have air with a very low pressure: if only it is enough for the bubbles to escape from the nozzle. Just such a pressure is developed by the Tsiolkovsky converter. By placing the converter and the Abramov engine on the same floating platform, we get a design that is very similar to a paddle steamer! It is only necessary to adapt either the engine itself to perform the functions of a paddle wheel, or make it rotate the propeller - and we have a ship in front of us that receives energy from sea waves. How long can a regular model swim? One, two, ten meters. And this one can cross the ocean. It's worth trying to make it.
